Tools and Supplies Needed

Steps to Change the Oil

  • Warm up the engine. Start the TTR125 and let it idle for several minutes. Warm oil drains more easily and carries away more contaminants.

  • Secure the bike. Place the bike on its side stand (the TTR125 leans naturally to the left, which helps drain all the oil). For maximum stability, use a bike stand.
  • Locate the oil drain bolt. The drain bolt is on the left side of the engine near the "waffle" (engine fin) area. This is the only drain bolt for the bike.
  • Position your oil drain pan under the drain bolt.
  • Remove the oil filler cap/dipstick. This lets air in and helps oil flow out smoothly.
  • Remove the oil drain bolt. Use your 12mm socket wrench. Be careful; it may be hot.
    Call-out: The TTR125 drain bolt is NOT under the engine, but on the lower left side for easy access.
  • Drain the oil completely. Let the oil drain fully. You can gently rock the bike or kick the engine over by hand a few times to help expel old oil.
  • Inspect and clean the drain bolt. Wipe it with a rag. Replace the crush washer if worn.
  • Reinstall the drain bolt. Thread it in by hand, then use your torque wrench to tighten to 15 lb-ft (about 20 Nm). Do not overtighten–as it's easy to strip the case.
  • Fill the engine with oil.
    • Insert a funnel and pour in about 1 quart of the recommended oil.
    • Replace the oil filler cap/dipstick.
  • Check for leaks. Inspect around the drain bolt and filler cap for oil leaks.
  • Check the oil level. Start the bike, let it run a minute, then turn off and allow a moment for oil to drain down. Stand the bike upright and remove, wipe, and reinsert the dipstick (threaded in all the way), then check the oil level. Add oil if necessary, avoiding overfilling.
  • Dispose of old oil responsibly. Collect in a sealed container and recycle at an appropriate facility.
