How to Change the Oil in a 2006 KTM 50SX Pro Senior (Pro Sr.)

Routine oil changes are crucial to keeping your 2006 KTM 50SX Pro Sr. running smooth and extending the life of your clutch and engine. Unlike four-stroke engines, your two-stroke KTM uses a separate gear/clutch oil, which requires regular attention due to the high operating temperatures and stresses placed on small-bore engines in motocross conditions.
Tools and Supplies Needed
- 13mm socket (for drain bolt removal)
- Ratchet wrench
- Extension bar (optional, for easier access)
- Measuring cup (for precise oil fill, 200 ml capacity)
- Drain pan
- Fresh oil: Motorex Cross Power 2T, or an equivalent quality 2-stroke gear/clutch oil
- Clean rags
- Side/triangle stand (do not use the center stand when draining)
Step-by-Step Guide
- Warm up the engine briefly for a minute or two to thin out the old oil. This allows for a more complete drain.
- Stabilize the bike using a side or triangle stand. The center stand should not be used during this process, as it can hinder proper draining.
- Remove the oil filler cap on the left side of the engine (look for a small cap above the clutch cover). Set it aside somewhere clean.
- Place your drain pan under the engine to catch the old oil.
- Remove the drain bolt (sump bolt) located at the lowest point of the engine case using your 13mm socket and ratchet. Be careful as the oil may be hot.
- Let all the old oil drain out completely. This may take several minutes; gently tilt the bike side to side to ensure all oil escapes.
- Inspect and clean the drain bolt. If your KTM drain plug is magnetic, see if there are any metal shavings–this can help monitor clutch or transmission wear.
- Reinstall the drain bolt by hand, then snug it gently with the socket and wrench. Do not over-tighten; you want the bolt firm and sealed, but aluminum threads strip easily.
- With your measuring cup, pour exactly 200 ml of fresh Motorex Cross Power 2T (or another high-quality 2-stroke gear oil) into the filler hole. Using the recommended quantity is important–too little oil can lead to rapid clutch wear, while overfilling can cause excessive drag or leaks.
- Replace the filler cap securely.
- Wipe away any spillage with a clean rag.
- Start the bike and let it idle for a minute, then check for any oil leaks around the drain bolt and filler cap. Top up if necessary.
KTM 50SX Pro Sr.: Special Considerations & Call-Outs
- Oil Change Frequency: The KTM 50SX Pro Sr. operates at extremely high RPM with a centrifugal clutch; its small clutch cavity means oil degrades quickly. Change the gear/clutch oil after every 1-2 hours of riding, or every single race event for best reliability. Frequent oil changes significantly prolong clutch life.
- Oil Quantity: Proper fill is 200 ml–do not overfill. Using too much oil can damage seals or cause excess drag.
- Drain Stand: Always use the side/triangle stand to allow proper drainage. The center stand keeps the bike too upright and can trap residual oil in the transmission/clutch cover.
- Oil Quality: Use a premium 2-stroke transmission fluid. Avoid regular automotive oils, as they may impact clutch feel or cause slippage. Motorex Cross Power 2T is factory-recommended for KTM 50s.
- Inspect for Debris: Some metal particles on the magnetic drain plug are normal, especially on new bikes or after a rebuild. A heavy build-up may suggest clutch or gear trouble.
- Torque Specs: KTM recommends being careful not to overtighten the drain bolt—this can strip the soft aluminum threads. If you have a torque wrench, check your manual for the precise value.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Persistent clutch fade or odd noises? You may be overdue for fresh oil, or the clutch may need inspection.
- Oil leak? Double-check the drain bolt seal and filler cap. KTM 50SX crankcases are soft aluminum—avoid overtightening any fastener.
- Changing oil frequently is the number one way to keep your 50SX Pro Sr. running fast and trouble-free.
