How to Change the Coolant in a 2024 Honda CRF450X

Changing the coolant on a regular schedule is key to keeping your CRF450X running reliably, especially after hard rides or in demanding conditions. Tools & Supplies Needed

  • Socket set (8 mm or 10 mm, as required)
  • Drain pan
  • Fresh glycol-based coolant (pre-mixed or concentrate diluted with distilled water)
  • Funnel
  • Clean shop rags
  • Torque wrench
  • New aluminum or copper crush washer (recommended)
  • Safety gloves and eyewear

Step 1.  Preparation

  • Allow the engine to cool completely. Servicing the cooling system when hot can result in serious burns and coolant spray under pressure.
  • Ensure the bike is level on a stand or secure on flat ground.

Step 2.  Access the Radiator Cap

  • Locate the radiator cap on the left upper side of the bike. On the CRF450X, bodywork removal is rarely needed, but if you do need more space, remove the left shroud panel with a socket.

Step 3.  Drain the Old Coolant

  • Position a drain pan under the water pump, which sits low on the right side of the engine.
  • Use your socket to remove the coolant drain bolt at the base of the water pump cover. (A small amount of coolant will begin flowing out immediately.)
  • Remove the radiator cap–this will let air in and speed up draining.
  • Wait until the flow tapers off completely.

Step 4.  Inspect System Components

  • Check the used coolant for oil, rust, or signs of contamination–these may indicate other issues.
  • Inspect the crush washer–replace it if damaged or as a best practice.
  • Visually check radiator hoses, clamps, and the water pump weep hole for leaks or deterioration. The CRF450X cooling system is robust, but off-road debris can nick hoses or radiators, so check closely for wear or physical damage.

Step 5.  Reinstall the Drain Bolt

  • Install the drain bolt (with a new crush washer if possible) and torque it to 10 Nm. Overtightening can strip the aluminum threads.

Step 6.  Add New Coolant

  • Using a funnel, slowly pour the recommended amount of fresh coolant into the radiator. The CRF450X takes about 1.03 liters at a normal coolant change.
  • Fill until the coolant level sits at the bottom of the radiator filler neck.
  • Secure the radiator cap tightly. Improper sealing can result in overheating due to coolant loss.

Step 7.  Air Bleed and Top Off

  • Start the bike and let it idle briefly with the radiator cap on. Squeeze the lower and upper radiator hoses gently to help dislodge any trapped air bubbles.
  • Shut the engine off and let it cool. Remove the cap and check the coolant level again, topping off as needed until full.

Step 8.  System Check

  • Inspect all fittings and hoses for leaks with the engine running. Look for drips around the drain bolt and hose connections.
  • Give the bike a short, gentle ride and recheck the coolant level once the engine is cool.

CRF450X Model-Specific Notes

  • The 2024 CRF450X features a toughened cooling system compared to earlier models, but always inspect the water pump weep hole located beneath the water pump. If coolant or oil leaks from this area, it signals potential seal failure.
  • Radiator fins can get packed with mud & debris–check during each coolant change and clear fins with low air pressure or a gentle brush.
  • Honda strongly recommends only opening the radiator cap when the engine is cold. Sudden cooling system venting causes pressure release and can lead to burns.
