Step-by-Step Coolant Change Process
- Allow the engine to cool completely. This prevents injury and ensures the system isn't under pressure.
- Remove the radiator cap. This allows airflow and makes draining easier. On the RMZ450, the cap is on top of the left radiator.

Locate the coolant drain bolt. On the RMZ450, the drain bolt is near the bottom of the water pump, left side of the engine. Place your drain pan underneath.
Note: For best access, you may need to remove plastic guards or panels. - Remove the coolant drain bolt. Use a 12 mm socket. As the bolt is loosened, coolant will begin to flow out. Let it drain completely .
- Replace the gasket washer. Always use a new gasket washer on the drain bolt to prevent leaks. Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten to factory spec .
- Bleed air from the system. The RMZ450 features an air bleeder bolt on the radiator. Loosen the air bleeder bolt until coolant flows out, then retighten securely .
- Refill the coolant. Fill the radiator slowly with new coolant, up to the inlet neck. RMZ450 capacity is 950 ml (1.0 US qt) .
- Secure the radiator cap. Tighten firmly until the safety tabs engage .
- Start and warm up the engine. Let the bike run for a few minutes, then shut off – allowing it to cool fully. Recheck and top off coolant as needed as air bubbles move out.
- Inspect for leaks and clean up. Wipe down any spilled coolant. Double-check that all bolts and the cap are secure. Ride once and recheck levels.
