Step-by-Step Coolant Change
- Ensure the bike is completely cool. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot, as pressurized steam or hot fluid can cause burns.
- Remove the radiator cap. Find the radiator cap at the top of the radiator. Twist it off slowly to relieve pressure, then remove completely.
- Locate & remove the coolant drain bolt. The drain bolt is usually found at the bottom of the engine side cover. Place a drain pan beneath, then loosen and remove the bolt to let the old coolant flow out. Remove the old gasket washer and discard it.
- Install a new gasket washer and reinsert the drain bolt. Thread the drain bolt back in with the new washer installed. Tighten to 11 N·m (1.1 kgf-m, 8.0 lbf-ft) using a torque wrench for a leak-free seal.
- Loosen the radiator air bleeder bolt. This bolt is often located on the right-side radiator tank. Loosening it will help air escape as new coolant is added. Keep a rag underneath to catch any drips.
- Pour fresh coolant into the radiator. Slowly add coolant up to the bottom of the filler neck. Use only the capacity specified for this model – 950 ml (1.0 US qt).
- Bleed the system. Once coolant begins to flow steadily from the air bleeder bolt, retighten it to 6 N·m (0.6 kgf-m, 4.5 lbf-ft).
- Top off & secure the radiator cap. Add a little more coolant if needed to the neck of the radiator. Secure the radiator cap back in place.
- Warm up the engine. Start the RMZ250 and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature. Shut the engine off and let it cool. Check coolant level and top off to the full mark if necessary.
