How to Change the Coolant in a 2022 Suzuki DRZ400SM

The 2022 Suzuki DRZ400SM remains a favorite among supermoto fans for its reliability and performance, but like every dirt bike, routine maintenance is key to longevity. Changing the coolant not only protects your engine from overheating but also prevents premature wear and corrosion inside the cooling system. Here is a step-by-step guide specifically for your DRZ400SM, with essential tips to keep your machine running strong.

What You Will Need

  • Pre-mixed 50/50 motorcycle coolant (make sure it's aluminum-friendly and silicate-free)
  • Socket set (12mm recommended for side cover bolts)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Drain pan
  • Rags or shop towels
  • Gloves and eye protection

Step 1: Prepare the Bike

  • Allow the engine to cool completely before starting.
  • Set the bike upright on a stand or on level ground.

Step 2: Remove the Side Cover

  • Use the 12mm socket or appropriate tool to remove the left side cover to access the water pump and coolant drain bolt.

Step 3: Drain the Old Coolant

  • Place a drain pan under the water pump area.
  • Remove the radiator cap to allow the system to vent and drain more efficiently.
  • Loosen and remove the coolant drain bolt from the water pump. Allow all old coolant to drain completely.
  • Optionally, open the lower coolant drain on the left radiator to help flush out more fluid.

Step 4: Flush (Optional but Recommended)

  • If the coolant is exceedingly dirty, briefly flush the system with distilled water. Do not use tap water as it can introduce minerals and impurities.
  • Drain any remaining flush or distilled water fully before proceeding.

Step 5: Refit the Drain Bolt

  • Inspect the drain bolt washer. Replace if damaged.
  • Reinstall and tighten the drain bolt securely, but do not over-tighten.

Step 6: Fill with New Coolant

  • Pour the new 50/50 pre-mixed coolant slowly into the radiator until it's full.
  • Open the small air bleeder screw, located at the top front of the cylinder head (if equipped on your model; some DRZ400SMs have this, others do not). Loosen it a few turns – air will escape, and once coolant starts to flow from the bleeder, snug it back down.
  • Continue filling the right radiator slowly, watching for air bubbles. Then, open the left radiator bleed screw until coolant escapes, then re-tighten.

Step 7: Remove Air from the System

  • Gently rock the bike side to side or tilt left and right to help trapped air reach the radiator fill neck.
  • Top off the coolant as needed after air escapes, filling to just below the filler neck.

Step 8: Final Steps

  • Replace the radiator cap securely.
  • Start the engine and let it idle until fully warm. Watch the temperature and the coolant level in the overflow tank for any sudden drops as air continues to escape.
  • Allow the engine to cool, then re-check and top off the coolant level in both the radiator and overflow bottle. Aim for about 1 inch of coolant in the overflow bottle for best results.
  • Reinstall the side cover and ensure all tools and old coolant are properly cleaned up and disposed of safely.

Special Considerations for the DRZ400SM

  • This model may or may not have the air bleeder screw at the water neck – inspect yours in advance to adjust the procedure accordingly.
  • Use only coolants safe for aluminum and avoid those containing silicates, which can cause damage to your radiators, water pump, and hoses.
  • The DRZ400SM is especially prone to overheating in hard supermoto use. Regularly flushing and replacing coolant will keep the system efficient.
  • Check for leaks at all hose connections and the water pump after the first ride following coolant replacement.
