Proper coolant maintenance is vital for keeping your 2022 Kawasaki KX85 running cool and performing at its best, especially during aggressive rides or hot summer days. Routine changes help prevent overheating, corrosion, and premature wear. The KX85 features a liquid-cooled engine with a straightforward design ideal for do-it-yourself maintenance–just follow these detailed steps designed for MotoSport riders.
What You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- 10mm socket or wrench
- Catch container for old coolant
- Fresh coolant (Kawasaki recommended or high-quality equivalent)
- Shop rags
- Gloves
- Optional: funnel
Preparation
- Ensure the bike is completely cool before starting—opening the radiator cap or drain bolt on a hot engine can cause serious burns from pressurized steam or hot coolant.
Tip: Coolant is toxic and slippery, so avoid direct skin contact and always clean up spills immediately. - Place the bike on a stand so it's upright and steady for the full procedure.
Draining the Old Coolant
- Locate the radiator cap atop the left radiator. Loosen but do not remove it yet.
- On the lower right side of the engine, you'll find the coolant drain bolt at the base of the water pump cover. Place a catch pan beneath.
- Loosen the drain bolt using your 10mm socket. As you remove the bolt, coolant will begin to flow out.
- Once the coolant begins draining, fully remove the radiator cap to allow air in and speed up the process.
- Allow all the coolant to drain completely from the system. Inspect the color and clarity–milky or rusty fluid may indicate other issues.
Flushing the System (Recommended)
- Reinstall the drain bolt (just finger tight for now). Add distilled water or radiator flush solution into the radiator neck.
- Reinstall the radiator cap, start the bike, and let it run for 2-3 minutes to circulate the fluid.
- Turn off the bike, let it cool, and repeat the drain procedure. This ensures remaining old coolant and contaminants are flushed away.
- Reinstall the drain bolt, and tighten to the manufacturer's recommended torque (do not overtighten).
Refilling the System
- Slowly pour fresh coolant into the radiator neck, allowing bubbles to escape as you go. Stop when coolant reaches just below the filler neck.
- The KX85 has a bleeder screw opposite the radiator cap. Use a Phillips screwdriver to slightly open this bleeder and release air while filling; when coolant flows steadily from the bleeder, close it securely.
- Reinstall the radiator cap. Make sure it clicks and locks securely–improper installation can lead to leaks or overheating after riding.
Bleeding & Final Checks
- Start the bike and let it idle for several minutes. Squeeze the radiator hoses to help move trapped air to the radiator neck.
- Shut off the engine and let cool. Carefully remove the radiator cap and inspect coolant level (top up if needed). Reinstall cap.
- Check beneath the drain bolt and around the radiator for leaks.
- Clean up all spills and properly dispose of the old coolant according to local regulations.
2022 Kawasaki KX85 Coolant System Notes
- Unique to the KX85: This model features a compact, high-revving engine–if the system isn't bled thoroughly, air pockets can quickly lead to overheating under hard use. Always double-check for trapped air after refilling.
- Gasket care: Inspect the drain bolt washer and radiator cap seal for wear, replacing them if damaged to prevent leaks and loss of pressure.
- The cooling system holds approximately 0.6L (20.3 oz)—don't overfill, as excess coolant may be pushed out after the first ride.
Changing your coolant as part of your regular maintenance schedule keeps your KX85 ready for the track or trails. If you find any leaks or persistent overheating after the change, inspect your hoses, radiator, and water pump for wear or damage.
