Maintaining your 2022 Honda CRF450R-S includes regularly changing the coolant to ensure optimal engine performance and longevity. The CRF450R-S features a high-performance, liquid-cooled engine that relies on fresh, uncontaminated coolant to regulate temperature during demanding off-road riding.

Before starting, make sure the engine is completely cool to avoid injury. Gather fresh coolant compatible with aluminum radiators, a drain pan, a socket set, a funnel, clean rags, and if possible, a new crush washer for the drain bolt.

1. Locate and Remove the Engine Guard (If Equipped)

Depending on your skid plate or aftermarket guards, you may need to remove the engine guard for easier access. Use a socket or wrench. Note: The engine guard bolts on this model torque to 10 N·m (7 lbf·ft). 2. Remove the Radiator Cap

3. Drain the Old Coolant

5. Reinstall the Drain Bolt

Once all the old coolant has drained, replace the crush washer if possible, then reinstall and tighten the drain bolt securely.

6. Add Fresh Coolant

Using a funnel, slowly pour new coolant into the radiator until it is level with the base of the radiator filler neck. The CRF450R-S requires approximately 1.03 liters (1.09 US qt) for a coolant change . Use a coolant designed for aluminum engines.

7. Bleed Air from the System

With the radiator cap still off, start the engine and let it run for a minute or two to help circulate coolant and eliminate air pockets. Shut off the engine, let it cool, then top off the radiator as needed. This process may require repeating until the coolant level stabilizes.

8. Reinstall the Radiator Cap

Install the radiator cap securely; improper installation may lead to excessive coolant loss or potential engine overheating .

9. Verify Coolant Level and Inspect

  • After your first brief ride, allow the bike to cool and recheck the coolant level.
  • Look for leaks around the drain bolt, hoses, and radiator connections. Tighten or replace components as necessary.

Special Notes for 2022 CRF450R-S Owners

  • This model features a race-bred cooling system; it is normal for a small amount of coolant to exit the overflow if the bike is overfilled or after hard riding .
  • Frequent track or trail riding in hot conditions demands more regular coolant checks.
  • Use only high-quality coolant, as generic or improper formulas can damage the magnesium/alloy components unique to CRF race bikes.
