What You'll Need:

- 10mm and 8mm sockets with ratchet

Steps to Change the Coolant:

Prep the Bike
Make sure the bike is completely cool. Prop it upright and remove the seat and right side panel to access the radiator cap and reservoir. Use your 8mm socket for the side panel bolts and Phillips screwdriver if needed for the tank cover fasteners. Remove the radiator cap first to relieve system pressure. -
Locate and Remove Drain Bolt
Place your drain pan under the water pump. Locate the coolant drain bolt at the bottom of the water pump—it typically uses a 10mm socket. Loosen and remove this bolt to allow old coolant to drain out. -
Drain Reservoir
The KLX140R L features a simple overflow reservoir behind the side panel. Disconnect the hose at the bottom and drain any remaining coolant. Inspect the hose for wear while you're there. -
Flush the System (Recommended)
For best results, temporarily re-install the drain bolt and fill the radiator with filtered water. Run the bike for a minute, then repeat the drain process. This removes lingering debris or old coolant. -
Inspect and Re-assemble
Inspect the radiator cap and hoses for signs of damage. Replace the drain bolt and torque it snug, avoiding overtightening. -
Refill with New Coolant
Using your funnel, slowly pour fresh coolant into the radiator until full. Fill the overflow tank to the Full line–do not overfill. Replace the radiator cap securely. -
Bleed Air from the System
Start the bike and let it idle with the radiator cap off for a minute to release air bubbles. Top up coolant if it drops. Reinstall the cap firmly once stable. -
Check for Leaks & Test Ride
Double-check all hoses, bolts, and the reservoir for leaks. Take a short ride, let the engine cool, and verify coolant levels are within the normal range.
