- If you wish to flush the system (recommended for preventative maintenance), reinstall the drain bolt, fill with distilled water, run the bike for a couple of minutes, then repeat the draining procedure. Do this process until only clear water drains from the system.
Refilling with Fresh Coolant
- Inspect the drain bolt and crush washer. Replace if damaged, then reinstall and torque to manufacturer specifications (typically 10 Nm, but confirm with your manual for accuracy).
- Slowly pour the new coolant into the radiator filling neck. Pour in increments, pausing to allow trapped air to escape as the system fills.
- Gently squeeze the radiator hoses and rock the bike from side to side to release any air bubbles from the cooling system.
- Once the radiator is full, leave the radiator cap off and start the engine. Allow the bike to idle for a few minutes until the thermostat cycles, which will further bleed air.
- Turn off the engine and check the coolant level again, topping off if necessary. Also fill the coolant overflow reservoir to the full mark if your model has one.
- Install the radiator cap securely.
Post-Change Checklist
- Visually inspect all hoses, the drain bolt, and radiator cap area for leaks after the bike has run through several heat cycles.
- Check the coolant level again after your first ride, as residual air may bleed out.
