Step-by-Step Coolant Change Instructions
- Let the engine cool completely. Hot coolant is dangerous and under pressure. Never open the system while hot–wait until the engine is fully cool.
- Remove the seat and side panels. Use your hand tools to detach these so you can access the radiator cap and cooling system hoses.
- Position the bike upright and secure it on a lift or stand.
- Place a drain pan under the water pump area. Locate the coolant drain bolt or screw at the bottom of the water pump (right-side of the engine). Remove this bolt to release old coolant into your pan. Open the radiator cap to allow air in and help drain all fluid.
- Inspect and flush (optional for best results). Once drained, you may flush the system with clean distilled water, cycling it through briefly (never run the engine long without coolant.). Drain the flush water out as above.
- Close the drain bolt securely, referencing your service manual for torque specs if desired.
- Slowly pour new coolant through the radiator cap opening. Use a funnel and fill up to just below the top – do not overfill. The 2020 Beta 500 RR-S takes around 1.3 liters. Leaving a small air gap at the top is important to accommodate thermal expansion and prevent overflow–filling to the brim can cause leaks or drips after riding.
