Coolant not only regulates temperature but also prevents corrosion and scale buildup in critical engine components. Tools & Supplies Needed

  • 10 mm socket or wrench
  • Large Phillips screwdriver
  • New coolant (use coolant designed for aluminum engines containing corrosion inhibitors)
  • Distilled water (if mixing coolant)
  • Drain pan
  • Clean rags
  • Torque wrench
  • New drain bolt gasket (recommended)

Step 1: Prepare the KX250F

  • Ensure the engine is completely cool before starting. Working with hot coolant can be dangerous and may cause burns.
  • Stabilize the motorcycle securely on a stand to prevent tipping.

Step 2: Drain the Old Coolant

  • Remove the radiator cap to relieve any system pressure and allow faster draining.
  • Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (right side of the engine, near the bottom).
  • Place the drain pan underneath. Remove the drain bolt using a 10 mm socket, and let the coolant flow completely into the pan.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Bolt

  • Install the drain bolt with the new gasket and tighten to the specified torque: 7.0 N·m (0.71 kgf·m, 62 in·lb).

Step 5: Add Fresh Coolant

  • Mix coolant and distilled water in a 50/50 ratio (unless you are using a pre-mixed coolant specifically designed for motorcycles).
  • Fill the radiator to the bottom of the filler neck. For the 2015 KX250F, the approximate total capacity is 1.2 liters (1.3 quarts).
  • Lean the bike slightly so the filler neck sits at the highest point. This allows trapped air to escape as you fill.
  • If equipped, open the bleeder screw until coolant flows out without air bubbles, then retorque the screw gently.

Step 6: Check for Leaks

  • Reinstall the radiator cap. Be sure it is fully seated and locked in place.
  • Wipe up any spilled coolant and visually inspect all fittings and seals for leaks.

Step 7: Bleed the System & Recheck Coolant Level

  • Start the engine and allow it to warm up thoroughly with the cap securely on.
  • Let the engine cool down, then check that coolant is at the proper level at the bottom of the radiator filler neck. Top up if necessary.
  • Examine the bike again for leaks. If there are any, address them before riding.

  • The 2015 KX250F uses an aluminum radiator–always use coolant with corrosion inhibitors formulated for aluminum.
