Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Ensure the engine is cool.
    Never attempt this job on a hot engine. Allow the bike to cool completely to avoid scalding burns.
  2. Remove side covers and access the radiator cap.
    Use the 12mm socket to remove the left side cover, which gives you access to the water pump and the coolant drain bolt. Locate the radiator cap and unscrew it to relieve system pressure and enable faster draining.
  3. Drain the old coolant.
    Position a drain pan under the water pump. Remove the drain bolt (found on the water pump cover, 10mm or 12mm head), and allow coolant to fully drain. If equipped, loosen the air bleeder screw (located on the water neck, top front of cylinder head; some DR-Z400SMs may not have this) to speed up draining and ensure all old coolant exits the system.*
  4. Remove and inspect the reservoir (optional but recommended).
    If your DR-Z400SM has a coolant overflow reservoir (look for a plastic tank mounted behind the left radiator), remove it and flush it with distilled water to remove sediment.
  5. Reinstall drain bolt and close the air bleeder (if present).
    Wipe threads clean and torque the drain bolt to manufacturer spec. If you opened the air bleed screw, leave it slightly loosened for the next step.
  6. Refill the coolant.
    Slowly pour coolant into the right radiator (this is the fill side). Allow air to escape through the air bleeder and the left radiator (if equipped). Once coolant seeps out of the bleeder, snug it closed.*
  7. Work out remaining air bubbles.
    Fill until the radiator is topped off. Carefully lean the bike left and right several times to encourage trapped air to move up and out. Top off with more coolant as needed. If your DR-Z400SM lacks a bleeder, leaning the bike is vital for purging air.*
  8. Seal the system and test.
    Reinstall the radiator cap. Start the bike and let it idle in a well-ventilated area. Watch temperature – avoid overheating. After reaching operating temp, shut off engine and let it cool completely.
  9. Final top-off and overflow check.
    Remove the radiator cap again. Top off coolant if the level dropped. Ensure about 1 inch of coolant is present in the overflow reservoir for proper operation.*
  10. Reinstall side covers and check for leaks.
    Tighten all fasteners. Wipe any residue and check for leaks after your first ride.

Model-Specific DR-Z400SM Tips

  • Some DR-Z400SMs may not have a bleeder screw on the water neck – the neck points straight up if this is the case. Simply lean the bike left and right as described to clear air.
