Steps for Changing Coolant on the 2014 Honda CRF250L
- Preparation: Ensure the bike is completely cool. Park on a level surface with the engine off and key removed.
- Remove Plastics:
- Using a 5mm Allen key, remove the radiator shroud's top screw on the left side.
- On the right, remove the four screws (and two plastic retainers) securing the side panel.
- Access Radiator Cap and Coolant Reservoir:
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the coolant reservoir mounting bolts.
- Remove the screws securing the radiator cap cover using a Phillips screwdriver, then take off the cap.
- Drain Old Coolant:
- Position a drain pan underneath the bike.
- Use an 8mm socket to loosen the coolant drain bolt (located on the right side of the water pump near the engine) and remove the old crush washer.
- Let all old coolant drain out completely.
- Flush (Optional, Recommended):
- If coolant is very dirty, flush with distilled water and let it drain completely before continuing.
- Install New Crush Washer & Replace Drain Bolt:
- Install a new crush washer on the drain bolt.
- Tighten the drain bolt securely (do not overtighten).
- Refill with Fresh Coolant:
- Insert a funnel into the radiator neck. Pour in the specified amount of fresh coolant until it reaches the top of the radiator.
- Fill the coolant reservoir up to the "MAX" line.
- Secure the radiator cap and coolant reservoir cap.
- Reinstall Plastics:
- Reattach any removed panels, screws, or the skid plate if you use an aftermarket one.
- Check for Leaks & Bleed the System:
- Start the bike and let it idle for a few minutes. Watch the temperature and check for leaks.
- Let bike cool, then recheck coolant levels (top off as needed; air may escape during the first heat cycle).
