Keeping your 2012 Kawasaki KLR650’s cooling system in top condition is crucial for reliable adventure, whether you are exploring rugged trails or commuting daily. Over time, coolant loses its effectiveness and can cause overheating – stay ahead by performing this essential maintenance, tailored specifically to your KLR650.
What You Need
- Silica-free motorcycle coolant, compatible with aluminum engines & radiators
- Distilled water (for flushing)
- Drain pan
- Phillips screwdriver
- Sockets & ratchet (for fairing or skid plate removal, if equipped)
- Shop rags & gloves
- Funnel
- Optional: siphon pump for removing overflow reservoir fluid
Step 1: Prepare the Bike
- Park the KLR650 on a level surface and ensure the engine is cool to prevent burns.
- If a skid plate interferes with access, remove it. Turn the handlebars as needed for easier reach when accessing the coolant reservoir panel.
Step 2: Access the Coolant Reservoir
- On the right side of the KLR650, use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws from the radiator reservoir cover. One is near the top; turning the bars right gives more room. The other is near the bottom, accessible with the wheel straight.
Step 3: Drain Old Coolant
- Position a drain pan beneath the water pump drain bolt (located at the lower left of the water pump cover).
- Slowly loosen the radiator cap to release pressure, then fully remove both the cap and the drain bolt to allow old coolant to flow out.
- To empty the overflow reservoir, either unbolt it and tip it out or use a small siphon pump for a clean removal.
Step 4: Flush the Cooling System
- Reinstall the drain bolt temporarily. Fill the radiator (and overflow reservoir if needed) with distilled water.
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, allowing water to circulate.
- Turn off the bike and let it cool, then drain the water completely. Repeat this flush once more for best results– stubborn deposits or old coolant may require several rinse cycles.
Step 5: Fill with New Coolant
- Reinstall and tighten the drain bolt (do not overtighten).
- Slowly fill the radiator with fresh, silica-free motorcycle coolant until it reaches the base of the filler neck.
- Fill the coolant reservoir to the “Full” line.
Step 6: Bleed the System & Final Checks
- Start the engine and let it idle until it reaches operating temperature–watch for bubbling or drops in the coolant level as air escapes.
- Install the radiator cap before the coolant starts to overflow. Check for leaks at the drain bolt, hoses, and around the water pump.
- Let the KLR650 cool completely. Check both the coolant reservoir and the radiator; top off to the correct levels if necessary after the first or second heat cycle, as some air may still burp out into the reservoir.
- Replace the reservoir cover and secure with Loctite (blue), if desired, for added vibration resistance.
2012 KLR650 Owner’s Notes
- This model’s cooling system is robust for off-road use but is sensitive to neglect. Old or improper coolant can lead to corrosion, especially in aluminum components.
- Never use automotive coolant with silicates. Always use distilled water for mixes and flushes; tap water may cause scaling.
- If your cooling fan is not coming on or the bike overheats easily, inspect fan operation and thermostat after refilling – issues sometimes show up after a coolant change.
- The KLR650’s expansion system is traditional; keep an eye on levels for several rides after the change for peace of mind.
