What You Need
- Silicate-free motorcycle coolant or 50/50 pre-mix
- Distilled water (if diluting concentrated coolant)
- Socket set and ratchet (8mm and 10mm)
- New crush washer for the drain bolt (recommended)
- Phillips screwdriver
- Funnel
- Plastic catch pan
- Paper towels or shop rags
- Torque wrench
- Protective gloves
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preparation
- Make sure the bike is completely cool before starting this job. Removing the radiator cap when hot risks scalding.
- Stand your CRF250R upright on a stable work surface.
- Remove Plastics for Access
- Remove the shroud or side number plate panels as needed around the radiators using the 8mm and 10mm sockets and a Phillips screwdriver. This allows access to the radiator cap and reservoir.
- Open the Cooling System
- With a Phillips screwdriver, carefully loosen and remove the radiator cap. This vents the system for fast draining.
- Drain the Old Coolant
- Place a drain pan beneath the water pump area on the right side of the engine.
- Remove the coolant drain bolt located at the base of the water pump with the appropriate socket. A crush washer sits under this bolt–replace it if reusing could cause leaks.
- Allow coolant to drain fully. Tilting the bike slightly side-to-side ensures full evacuation.
- Inspect and Reinstall the Drain Bolt
- Install a new crush washer if available.
- Reinstall the drain bolt and torque it to factory specification–usually 10 Nm for this model. Never overtighten.
- Fill with Fresh Coolant
- Slowly pour your silicate-free motorcycle coolant or 50/50 pre-mix into the radiator neck with a funnel until full.
- If using concentrated coolant, mix with distilled water per bottle directions–never use tap water due to minerals that can harm the system.
- Bleed Air and Top Off
- With the cap still off, gently rock the bike to release trapped air. Add coolant until it maintains the full level.
- Reinstall the radiator cap securely. Make sure it clicks fully in place to prevent leaks.
- Start the engine, let it idle with the bike upright. Watch the temperature and radiator. Shut off after a few minutes, let it cool, and recheck/retop coolant if needed.
- Reinstall Plastics
- Replace any shrouds, number plates, or covers that were removed for access.
2010 CRF250R Owner Notes
- The CRF250R is a high-performance motocross bike with a compact liquid cooling system. Because the coolant capacity is relatively low, change the coolant at least once per season, or after heavy use to prevent overheating, mineral buildup, or internal corrosion.
