Step-by-Step Coolant Change
- Ensure the engine is cool. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine–pressurized coolant can spray and cause injury.
- Lift your YZ125 safely. Use a stand or scissor lift to keep the bike upright and stable for the procedure.
- Remove the radiator cap. The cap is located on the left side of the bike above the radiator. Twist it slowly to relieve any remaining pressure.
- Locate the coolant drain bolt. On the 2009 YZ125, the coolant drain is an 8mm bolt at the bottom of the water pump cover (right side of the engine). Place your drain pan underneath before removing the bolt.

- Reinstall the drain bolt. Tighten the 8mm drain bolt securely, but do not overtighten or strip the threads.
- Fill with fresh coolant. Use a funnel and carefully pour your new coolant into the radiator. On the 2009 YZ125, the coolant level should reach just below the lip of the radiator filler neck.
- Bleed the system of air. Gently rock the bike side to side with the cap off, then start the engine and let it idle with the cap still removed for about a minute. Top off the coolant as the level drops from trapped air escaping.
- Reinstall and secure the radiator cap. Make sure the cap is snug.
- Check for leaks and correct level. Inspect the drain bolt and hoses. After a short test ride, let the bike cool and check your coolant level again, topping up if necessary.
