How to Change the Coolant in a 2006 Suzuki DRZ400E

Regular coolant changes are essential for your 2006 Suzuki DRZ400E to ensure reliable engine performance and protection from overheating. The DRZ400E, unlike some newer fuel-injected models, uses a straightforward liquid-cooling system, but it does have a few quirks owners should consider when servicing. Below is a step-by-step MotoSport guide to help you perform a proper coolant change and protect your engine for countless rides.
What You Need
- Socket set (8 mm, 12 mm)
- Phillips screwdriver
- Catcher pan for old coolant
- Pre-mixed motorcycle coolant (do not use straight tap water)
- Distilled water (for flushing, optional but recommended)
- Rags – for cleanup
- Gloves & eye protection
Preparation
- Work only on a cold engine to avoid burns and damaging hot components.
- Place the bike on a flat, secure stand.
- Remove the right side panel and skid plate if installed, for easier access to the water pump and drain bolt.
Draining the Old Coolant
- Place your catch pan directly under the water pump (right side of engine).
- Using a 8 mm socket, remove the drain bolt at the bottom of the water pump.
Some coolant may spill out rapidly, so be ready with rags. - Open the radiator cap (right radiator, top) to allow the system to drain fully.
Flushing the System (Recommended)
- Once drained, reinstall the drain bolt and snug it down.
- Pour distilled water slowly into the radiator cap opening until it flows from the drain bolt. This will help displace any old coolant or debris.
- Drain out the flush water by removing the bolt again.
- Reinstall and tighten the drain bolt. Do not overtorque (hand-snug – the water pump is aluminum).
Filling with Fresh Coolant
- Check for air bleed screws on the water neck (top front of cylinder head) and the top of the left radiator. Not all 2006 DRZ400E bikes have a water neck bleeder; if your water neck points straight up, this bleeder is absent.
- Crack open the bleed screws (if equipped) just a few turns.
- Slowly fill the right radiator with fresh pre-mixed coolant. As you fill, air will escape from the bleed screws.
- When coolant begins to seep out of a bleeder, snug it closed. Repeat for all bleed screws available.
- Once the right radiator is full, gently rock the bike side to side to help trapped air escape. Top off coolant as needed.
- Reinstall the radiator cap securely.
Checking and Topping Off
- Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to circulate the coolant and expel any remaining air.
- Watch the temperature closely – do not leave the bike unattended. Shut off promptly if overheating occurs.
- Allow the bike to cool. Carefully open the radiator cap and top up coolant if needed.
- Top off the overflow reservoir with 1 inch of coolant for optimal performance.
Special Notes for the 2006 DRZ400E Owner
- This model does not utilize a radiator fan from the factory, so being diligent with coolant levels and air purging is especially important for preventing boil-overs during technical and slow riding.
- Some bikes may lack certain bleed screws, making careful rocking and slow filling even more important to avoid bubbles in the system.
- Always use silicate-free premixed coolant designed for aluminum motorcycle engines to maximize water pump and seal longevity.
- Dispose of old coolant responsibly as it is toxic to the environment and animals.
