Coolant not only regulates your engine temperature, but also helps prevent corrosion in your aluminum radiator and internal passages. Over time, coolant breaks down and loses its efficiency – resulting in inadequate cooling, overheating, and potential engine damage. What You'll Need
- Fresh engine coolant (compatible with aluminum radiators; 50:50 mix of coolant & distilled water)
- Distilled water (never tap)
- Socket set and wrench
- Catch pan
- New drain bolt gasket
- Gloves and safety glasses
Step 1: Preparation
- Ensure the bike is completely cool. Hot coolant can cause severe burns.
- Place the RMZ450 securely on a stand, ideally on level ground for accuracy.
- Remove the seat or side panel as needed to easily access the radiator cap.
Step 2: Draining the Old Coolant
- Place your drain pan under the water pump area (left side of the engine).
- Remove the radiator cap to allow air in – this improves coolant flow.
- Locate the coolant drain bolt underneath the water pump. Using the appropriate socket, slowly loosen and remove the drain bolt (have your catch pan ready).
Dispose of the old coolant responsibly; never pour it down the drain or on the ground.
Step 3: Flushing the System (Recommended)
- With the drain bolt out, pour a small amount of distilled water into the radiator. This flushes out any remaining coolant and contaminants.
- Allow it to fully drain.
- For maximum cleanliness, repeat this process once more.
Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Bolt
- Inspect the drain bolt and its gasket; replace the gasket with a new one every time to prevent leaks.
- Reinstall and tighten the drain bolt securely, but do not overtighten.
Step 5: Filling with New Coolant
- Slowly pour your 50:50 premixed coolant into the radiator until it reaches the fill neck. The RMZ450 takes about 950 ml of coolant.*
- Be patient; let air bubbles escape as you fill.
Step 6: Bleeding Air from the System
- Locate the air bleeder bolt near the thermostat housing on the upper cylinder (refer to your owner's manual for precise location).
- Loosen the bleeder bolt until coolant starts to seep out (air bubbles first, then coolant). Tighten the bolt when only coolant comes out.
- Top off the radiator if needed.
Step 7: Cycling & Checking
- With the radiator cap off, start the engine. Let it idle until warm (not hot)–watch for more air bubbles escaping.
- Shut off the engine, allow it to cool, and check coolant level. Top up if needed.
- Reinstall the radiator cap securely.
Model-Specific Notes for the 2005 Suzuki RMZ450
- The RMZ450's aluminum cooling system is sensitive to mineral buildup, so using only distilled water as a diluent is critical.
- The bike does not employ a coolant reservoir. Fluid is filled directly into the radiator.
- Inspect hoses and the radiator for wear and leaks – this model's high-revving engine generates significant heat.
- Check radiator cap performance. An old or worn cap may not hold pressure, resulting in premature coolant loss or overheating.
