Changing the coolant on your 2005 KTM 300EXC is a key maintenance task to keep your engine temperatures under control and ensure peak performance. This two-stroke enduro legend uses a twin radiator system common to KTM dirt bikes, so you want to flush both sides thoroughly to avoid residue build-up and overheating.

What You Will Need

  • New coolant (silicate-free recommended for aluminum radiators)
  • Distilled water for flushing
  • Drain pan
  • Socket and wrench set

  • Clean rag or shop towels

Step-by-Step Coolant Change Procedure

  1. Let your bike cool completely before beginning. Never open the radiator cap on a hot motor–serious burns can result.
  2. Remove the radiator cap located on top of the left radiator beside the gas tank. This lets air in and helps coolant flow out more quickly during draining.
  3. Position a drain pan beneath the engine, below the water pump and the lower radiator hose.
  4. Locate the coolant drain bolt on the lower water pump cover. Using your socket, remove the bolt and allow all coolant to drain into your pan. Some coolant may also exit from the crossover tube between the left and right radiators–ensure both are empty.
  5. Flush the system by reinstalling the drain bolt (finger-tight), filling the radiators with distilled water, and reinstalling the cap. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes, then turn it off, allow it to cool, and drain again. Repeat with fresh distilled water if needed until drained water is clear.
  6. Reinstall the drain bolt securely after the system is thoroughly cleaned out. Do not overtighten; refer to your KTM torque spec for the water pump cover bolt.
  7. Fill both radiators with fresh coolant until the level is about 10mm (0.4 in) above the radiator fins when cold, as specified for KTM EXC models. This ensures adequate volume for the system to operate at peak efficiency.
  8. Bleed the cooling system: Tilt the bike gently left and right or squeeze the radiator hoses to expel any trapped air. Check the level again and top off if necessary.
  9. Reinstall the radiator cap and start your engine. Let it reach operating temperature, then turn off and let it cool. Recheck the coolant level and top up if needed. Dispose of the old coolant responsibly.

Important Notes for 2005 KTM 300EXC Owners

  • The 300EXC's parallel twin-radiator system means coolant must drain from both sides. Always ensure both radiators are empty during a flush or service.
  • Use only coolants safe for aluminum components to avoid corrosion or system damage.
