Step-by-Step Coolant Change Process
- Access the radiator. Remove the seat and any plastics that block access to the radiator cap and hoses.
- Drain the old coolant.
Place a drain pan underneath the engine. Locate the water pump–typically on the right side of the engine–and loosen the lower radiator hose clamps. Remove the lower hose or open the water pump drain bolt. Let the coolant drain completely. - Detach the radiator cap to allow air in, which helps the coolant drain faster and more completely.
- Optional: Flush the system.
If the old coolant is dirty or discolored, you may want to flush the system with clean water. Reinstall the hose temporarily, add distilled water, briefly run the engine with the radiator cap off, and drain again. Be sure no water remains before adding new coolant. - Inspect hoses and gaskets. Check for cracks or brittleness in hoses and replace if needed. The KDX220 is getting older, so consider updating any worn clamps or gaskets at the water pump cover.
- Reattach all hoses and tighten clamps. If you removed the water pump cover, use a new gasket and torque bolts to spec: 9.8 Nm (87 in-lb).
- Fill with new coolant. Slowly pour fresh coolant into the radiator up to the bottom of the filler neck. Top off the reserve/overflow tank to its "Full" mark.
- Remove air from the system.
Air can easily become trapped in the KDX220’s cooling system. To ensure thorough bleeding, gently squeeze the cooling hoses to work out air bubbles. You can also loosen the bleed bolt at the top of the cylinder head until coolant comes out, then retighten. - Run the engine with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens and coolant begins to cycle.
- Shut off the bike and let it cool down completely. Once cool, check coolant level and top off the radiator and overflow as needed. It is normal for the overflow tank to drop in level as air purges out.
- Check for leaks and recheck level after your first ride. If you find you’re adding more coolant repeatedly, inspect for possible gasket leaks.
Important Notes for KDX220 Owners
- Coolant Capacity: The system holds approximately 1.1 liters (≈1/3 gallon). Overfilling can cause spillage and doesn’t improve performance.
- Common air trap: Air can easily get lodged at the top of the cylinder head–be sure to bleed carefully to prevent overheating issues.
- Water pump gaskets: If you ever remove the water pump cover, always replace the gasket to ensure a proper seal.
- Coolant choice: Use a silicate-free coolant formulated for off-road motorcycles and safe for aluminum radiators. Avoid universal automotive coolants unless specifically rated for motorcycles.
