  • Phillips screwdriver
  • 8 mm socket with ratchet
  • 10 mm socket with ratchet
  • Torque wrench (capable of 10 ft–lbs)

Preparation

  • Make sure the engine is completely cool to avoid burns.

Draining the Old Coolant

  • Locate the vertical 8 mm drain bolt on the front right of the engine (it's part of the water pump). Do not loosen the nearby horizontal bolt, as that is a mounting bolt.
  • Place a catch pan under the drain area.
  • Remove the radiator cap (top left side of the bike) to allow for smooth draining and loosen the drain bolt. Let all coolant flow out.

Flushing the System

  • Refit the drain bolt finger-tight and fill the radiator with clean water.
  • Run the engine briefly until warm (with the radiator cap on), then shut the engine off and let it cool fully.
  • Drain the water as before. For a more thorough flush, repeat the water flush step once more.

Draining the Overflow Reservoir

  • On the left side, remove the radiator reservoir cover (two Phillips screws, accessed by turning the handlebar as needed).
  • Remove the reservoir mounting bolts (10 mm socket, four corners), or for convenience, extract coolant with a pump.
  • Invert or extract the old coolant and rinse the bottle with water. Reinstall it securely.

Refilling with Fresh Coolant

  • Ensure the drain bolt is torqued to 10 ft–lbs and all surfaces are dry.
  • Fill the radiator to the top with suitable coolant. Also, fill the reservoir to the "Full" mark.
  • Reinstall the radiator cap and reservoir cover.
  • Run the engine to warm it up, then shut it down. Let it cool and check coolant levels—top off as needed.

Special Considerations for the 2000 KLR650

  • Tank Removal: Some coolant service tasks are easier if you remove the fuel tank, but a routine flush and fill typically does not require it unless access is limited.
