- Remove the radiator cap and drain bolt. Opening the radiator cap allows air in so coolant drains faster. Drain all old coolant into your container. Be sure to properly dispose of used coolant according to local regulations.
- Flush the system (optional but recommended). If the coolant was dirty or hasn't been changed in a long time, flush the system with distilled water to clear any lingering sediment.
- Reinstall the drain bolt with a new washer if needed. Ensure the bolt is tightened to manufacturer specs.
- Refill the system with fresh coolant. Use a quality motorcycle coolant, preferably a premixed 50/50 antifreeze suitable for aluminum components. Fill to the base of the radiator filler neck and fill the overflow reservoir to the indicated level.
- "Burp" the system. Start the engine and let it idle with the radiator cap off. As the coolant circulates, gently squeeze the coolant hoses to help release trapped air bubbles. Top off as needed until the fluid level stabilizes.
- Reinstall the radiator cap and check for leaks. Allow the bike to cool, then recheck coolant level and top off the overflow reservoir if needed.
Special Notes for XR80 Owners
- Classic air-cooled engine: Standard 1999 Honda XR80 bikes do not utilize coolant flushes or radiator servicing, but it's vital to regularly inspect and clean the cooling fins to ensure efficient heat dissipation.
- Engine oil plays a key role: On air-cooled bikes like the XR80, oil serves both as a lubricant and an additional cooling agent. Change your oil frequently and use the recommended grade.
