How to Change the Coolant in a 1998 Kawasaki KX500

Before You Start

- Gather necessary tools: drain pan, 8mm or 10mm wrench, pliers, fresh coolant (silicate-free/compatible with aluminum), soft cloths, and safety gloves.
Step-by-Step Guide

Remove the seat and shrouds.
This gives easy access to the radiator cap and hoses. -
Locate the radiator cap and drain bolt.
The radiator cap is on top of the left radiator. The coolant drain bolt is generally found at the lower side of the water pump cover on the right side of the engine.
Place your drain pan below the drain bolt. -
Remove the radiator cap.
This allows air in and helps the system drain efficiently. -
Remove the drain bolt.
Using the correct wrench, carefully loosen & remove the drain bolt. Coolant will flow out–let it drain completely. -
Flush the system (optional for a thorough job).
If you've experienced overheating or are swapping coolant types, re-install the drain bolt and fill the radiator with distilled water. Replace the cap, run the engine for a short period, let it cool, then repeat the drain process. For the KX500, avoid garden hose water due to mineral content; distilled is best.
For stubborn old coolant, compressed air can be gently blown through the system (with hoses disconnected) to evacuate remaining fluid. -
Reinstall the drain bolt.
Clean and inspect the sealing washer before reinstalling. Torque to spec, but do not overtighten. -
Fill with fresh coolant.
Use a high-quality silicate-free coolant designed for aluminum systems. Slowly fill the radiator until just below the filler neck. For the KX500's large, high-output engine, a coolant with superior heat transfer properties is recommended. -
Bleed the system.
Gently rock the bike side to side to dislodge air bubbles. Squeeze the radiator hoses by hand to help air pockets out. With cap still off, briefly start the engine to warm it and circulate coolant, then shut off and top off as needed. - Reinstall the radiator cap and any removed bodywork.

Check for leaks.
Inspect all fittings and hoses. Run the bike and monitor level and temperature for the next ride, topping off if necessary.
