Coolant Change Steps
- Ensure the engine is cool. Never remove the radiator cap on a hot engine to avoid burns from pressurized steam or hot fluid.
- Remove seat and side panels if needed for radiator access (optional).
- Place a container under the engine beneath the right side (where the water pump is located) to catch old coolant.
- Locate and remove the coolant drain bolt. On the 1992 YZ250, this is found on the lower water pump cover. Use a 10 mm wrench to carefully loosen it. Remove the bolt and its copper washer. Allow coolant to fully drain, then remove the radiator cap for faster draining.
- Flush the system. Replace the drain bolt. Fill the radiator with clean tap water and reinstall the cap. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then shut off and drain again. Repeat as needed until clear water comes out (do not overheat engine during this process).
- Reinstall the drain bolt and copper washer. Torque to 10 Nm (7.2 ft-lb). Do not overtighten – the water pump cover is aluminum and can crack.
- Fill with fresh coolant. Mix coolant and distilled water 50/50 if not using pre-mixed. Slowly pour in until the radiator is full, then squeeze the radiator hoses to burp out trapped air. Top off as needed.
- Replace the radiator cap securely.
- Start and idle the bike for a couple of minutes, monitoring the coolant level as any remaining air bleeds out. Shut off, allow to cool, and top off coolant if necessary.
- Dispose of old coolant responsibly. Do not pour into the ground or drains.
