How to Change the Coolant in a 1984 Suzuki RM125: Step-by-Step Guide

What You Will Need

  • Replacement coolant (ethylene glycol-based, silicate-free for motorcycles)

  • 8mm wrench or socket
  • Catch container for old coolant

Preparation

  • Ensure your RM125 is cool to the touch before starting. Pressure in a hot system can cause serious burns.
  • Place your dirt bike on a stable stand. Remove the seat and side panels for better access to the radiator and cap area if needed.

Drain the Old Coolant

  • Locate the radiator cap on top of the left radiator. Remove it slowly to release any residual pressure.
  • Find the coolant drain bolt at the bottom of the water pump (left-side engine case, 8mm head bolt). Place your catch container beneath and remove the bolt to start draining.

Install the Drain Bolt

  • Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten securely (do not overtighten, to prevent thread damage). Replace the sealing washer if it’s worn for a leak-free seal.

Add New Coolant

  • Using your funnel, pour fresh premixed coolant into the radiator until it reaches the bottom of the filler neck. Avoid overfilling. (Some coolants require mixing with distilled water; check product instructions.)

Burp the Radiator

  • Start your RM125 with the radiator cap still off. Let it idle for several minutes, gently blipping the throttle to help dislodge air bubbles (“burping” the system). Keep a close eye for leaks.
  • As the engine warms, the coolant level may drop. Top off as needed.
  • Once no more air rises and the system is full, reinstall the radiator cap securely.

Inspect & Dispose

  • Check for any leaks around the drain bolt, water pump, or hoses.
  • Dispose of old coolant and rinse water at an approved recycling center – never pour down the drain or onto the ground.
