Overview
This guide from MotoSport walks you through safely flushing and replacing the brake fluid on your 2020 Honda Rancher 420 2X4 ES (TE1). Regular fluid service restores braking performance, removes water contamination, and prevents internal corrosion. Follow the steps below precisely, use proper safety equipment, and discard old fluid responsibly.
What you’ll need
- Honda-specified brake fluid: DOT 3 (use fresh fluid from a sealed container)
- Clear plastic tubing sized to the bleeder nipples
- Catch bottle for old fluid
- Hand vacuum bleeder or one-way brake bleeder kit (recommended) OR a helper for manual bleeding
- 10mm or 8mm wrench for bleeder nipples (verify size on your calipers)
- Phillips/flat screwdriver and pliers (for reservoir cap clamps)
- Clean lint-free rags and isopropyl alcohol
- Latex or nitrile gloves and safety glasses
- Service manual or floor jack/stands to stabilize the ATV
Safety & model-specific notes
- Park on a level surface, put the transmission in park or neutral with the parking brake on, and disconnect the battery if you’ll be working near electrical connections.
- The Rancher 420 2X4 ES (TE1) uses a handlebar-mounted master cylinder/reservoir for the front brakes and a rear brake master cylinder for the rear system. Identify both reservoirs before beginning.
- Muddy or wet riding is common with this model; contamination accelerates fluid degradation. If you ride in wet conditions frequently, service intervals should be more frequent than for pavement-only use.
- Do not mix DOT 5 silicone fluid with DOT 3/4. Use only DOT 3 as specified by Honda for this model unless your service manual explicitly permits DOT 4.
- Brake fluid is hygroscopic — once opened, store monitoring dates and replace within manufacturer recommendations (MotoSport suggests replacing every 1-2 years for utility ATVs in wet or heavy-use conditions).
Preparation
- Clean around the reservoir caps thoroughly with a rag and isopropyl alcohol to keep dirt from entering the system.
- Loosen reservoir caps but don’t remove them yet. Remove any foam or dust covers. On some Rancher models the reservoir has a spring-retained cap — remove carefully.
- Raise and support the ATV so wheels can turn if you need to operate the brakes during bleeding. For a 2X4, secure the rear wheel for rear bleeding if necessary.
- Draw into your vacuum bleeder or prepare your helper and a clear hose and catch bottle. Cut a short length of hose and fit it over each bleeder nipple so the end sits in the catch bottle filled partially with fresh fluid to avoid air getting sucked back.
Bleeding sequence
Use the correct sequence to minimize trapped air. For Rancher 420 2X4 ES follow this order: farthest caliper from the master cylinder first, then closer. Typically that means rear caliper first (if separate reservoir), then front calipers from farthest to nearest. If your model has a combined system, bleed the front then rear following master cylinder layout.
Method A – Vacuum or pressure bleeder (recommended)
- Fill the reservoir with fresh DOT 3 fluid.
- Attach the vacuum bleeder to the bleeder nipple of the farthest caliper and open the nipple one-quarter to one-half turn.
- Run the bleeder until clear, bubble-free fluid flows; top the reservoir as needed to prevent air entry.
- Close the bleeder nipple, remove the vacuum hose, and torque the bleeder to the specified snug value (consult your service manual; snug but do not over-torque).
- Repeat for the next caliper in sequence. Keep the reservoir filled throughout the process.
- After all calipers are bled, pump the brake lever/pedal to confirm firm feel. Check reservoir level and tighten cap securely.
Method B – Two-person manual bleed
- Person A holds firm pressure on the lever/pedal (about half-travel) and holds it there.
- Person B opens the bleeder nipple slightly to let fluid and air escape until flow is steady and clear, then closes the nipple before Person A releases the lever.
- Top off the reservoir between cycles. Work from the farthest caliper toward the master cylinder.
- Repeat until no bubbles appear and the lever/pedal is firm.
Replacing all fluid (full flush)
- Perform bleeding at each wheel until the expelled fluid is new and clear. A full system flush may require 2–3 reservoir refills.
- After the last bleed, run the brake lever/pedal several times and check for firmness and consistent pedal height.
- Wipe all spills immediately. Brake fluid will damage paint and plastics; clean any spills with isopropyl alcohol and rinse with water if needed.
Final checks
- Ensure bleeder nipples and reservoir caps are tight and clean. Replace worn rubber grommets or cracked hoses.
- Inspect brake lines, calipers, and master cylinder for leaks or damage. Replace any corroded fasteners or swollen lines.
- Test-ride at low speed in a safe area to confirm braking performance before returning to normal use.
Maintenance tips specific to the Rancher 420 2X4 ES
- Given the Rancher’s utility role, inspect the rear brake linkage and pivot points for dirt build-up and grease per the service schedule; contaminant ingress at these points can affect rear braking feel.
- Stock bleed nipple sizes and locations can be tight to access. MotoSport recommends keeping a compact wrench and a clear hose with clamps to avoid stripping nipples while working in tight spaces.
- If your Rancher has the electric shift or accessory wiring near the master cylinder, protect connectors from fluid and clean connectors after service.
- If you’re replacing calipers or master cylinder components, always bench-bleed the new master cylinder before reinstalling to shorten field bleeding time.
Disposal
Collect old brake fluid and dispose of it at an approved hazardous-waste or recycling facility. Do not pour down drains or onto the ground.
MotoSport final checklist before riding
- Reservoir cap installed and secure
- No leaks at bleeder nipples or hose fittings
- Firm brake lever/pedal and consistent stopping during low-speed test
- Cleaned any spilled fluid from painted surfaces
