This guide is proprietary to MotoSport and walks you step-by-step through replacing and bleeding the hydraulic brake fluid on a 2019 CFMOTO CFORCE 400 ATV. Follow these instructions carefully, use the correct tools and fluid, and always work safely.

What you need

  • Factory-recommended brake fluid (consult your owner’s manual for DOT grade; if unsure use DOT 4 compatible fluid)
  • Clear plastic tubing that fits snugly over the bleed nipple
  • Clean catch bottle (marked for used fluid)
  • Turkey baster or fluid syringe
  • Wrenches to fit bleed nipples and banjo bolts (open-end or flare nut)
  • Shop rags, brake cleaner, gloves & eye protection
  • Jack or ramps and stands to raise the ATV safely (if needed)
  • Optional: vacuum or pressure brake bleeder

Model notes specific to the 2019 CFORCE 400

  • The CFORCE 400 has hydraulic disc brakes front and rear with separate master cylinder reservoirs: the front master cylinder is at the handlebar area and the rear reservoir is near the rear brake pedal. Identify which reservoir feeds which calipers before you begin.
  • This model typically does not have ABS, so bleeding is straightforward but follow the correct reservoir-to-caliper order.
  • The bleeder nipples are accessible but may be small; clean around them thoroughly before opening to avoid contamination.
  • Avoid getting brake fluid on painted plastics; it will damage finishes. Rinse spills immediately with water & wipe dry.
  • Always discard used fluid; do not reuse. Brake fluid absorbs moisture — replacement is recommended every 1-2 years depending on use and storage.

Preparation

  1. Park on level ground, engage park brake, and remove the key. Wear gloves and eye protection.
  2. Clean tops of reservoirs and surrounding area with brake cleaner. Remove reservoir caps and diaphragms to allow old fluid to be removed and to let air escape while bleeding.
  3. Check fluid level in each reservoir and use a turkey baster to remove most of the old fluid, leaving a small amount to prevent introducing air to the lines. Refill with fresh fluid up to the specified mark; keep the cap loosely fitted to keep dust out.
  4. Position ATV so you can access each caliper bleed nipple. Raise wheels with jack or stands if needed. Keep reservoirs above the calipers to minimize air ingress.

Bleeding order principle

Always bleed from the caliper farthest from the master cylinder first, then work toward the closest. For the CFORCE 400 this often means: opposite-side front caliper farthest, then the other front, then rear. Confirm which caliper is farthest by tracing the hydraulic lines from each master reservoir.

Manual (two-person) bleed procedure

  1. Attach clear tubing to the bleeder nipple and place the other end in the catch bottle partly filled with fresh fluid to prevent air draw-back.
  2. One person pumps the brake lever or pedal slowly until firm, then holds pressure. The other person opens the bleeder nipple about 1/4 turn to let fluid & air escape until flow is steady and bubble-free, then closes the nipple while pressure is still applied. Repeat until no air appears.
  3. Top up reservoir after each caliper cycle to prevent the reservoir from running dry. Do not let it go empty.
  4. Proceed in the correct order: farthest caliper first, then next, finishing with the caliper closest to the reservoir.
  5. After all calipers are bled, pump lever/pedal several times to check firmness. If soft, repeat bleeding sequence.

Single-person vacuum or pressure bleeder method

  • If using a vacuum bleeder, attach vacuum to bleed nipple tubing and open the nipple. Keep the reservoir topped and let fluid draw through until clear and bubble-free.
  • If using a pressure bleeder on the master cylinder, pressurize the reservoir per tool instructions and open bleeders one at a time until clean fluid flows.
  • Always follow tool manufacturer instructions and keep the reservoir from running dry.

Post-bleed checks

  • Wipe all connections clean and ensure bleed nipples are tightened snugly. If the banjo or line fittings were loosened, torque to factory specs or tighten to a secure fit while avoiding over-torquing the soft fittings.
  • Replace reservoir diaphragm & caps, ensure proper fluid level, and secure cover.
  • Test brake lever and pedal travel with the ATV stationary until brakes feel firm. Then test at low speed in a safe area to confirm proper operation.
  • Inspect for leaks around calipers, hoses & master cylinders after the test ride.

Safety & maintenance tips

  • Brake fluid is hygroscopic — once opened, store sealed fluid in a cool dry place and avoid bottle contamination.
  • Replace fluid at the interval recommended by CFMOTO or sooner if brakes feel spongy or if vehicle is used in wet/muddy conditions frequently.
  • Use only the DOT grade specified by the manufacturer; mixing incompatible fluids can damage seals and reduce performance.
  • If you encounter persistent sponginess after thorough bleeding, suspect damaged hoses, caliper seals, or a leaking master cylinder. Replace components as needed.
