This MotoSport-exclusive service guide covers safe, effective brake fluid replacement and bleeding for the 2018 Textron Alterra MudPro 700 ATV. Follow these steps carefully to restore firm, predictable braking and protect hydraulic components.
Important model notes for the 2018 Alterra MudPro 700
- The MudPro 700 uses hydraulic disc brakes on front and rear. Reservoir caps are labeled with the DOT rating; always use the brake fluid type specified on the cap or in the owner&s manual. DO NOT mix silicone-based DOT 5 with glycol-based DOT 3/4/5.1.
- Brake fluid is hygroscopic and degrades with water absorption; replace at recommended intervals or when contamination is suspected (soft lever, spongy pedal, or dark fluid).
- Inspect brake lines, calipers, banjo fittings and master cylinder boots for wear, leaks or damage before bleeding. Replace any suspect parts with MotoSport-approved components.
- If your MudPro has an aftermarket rack, skid or accessory that interferes with reservoir access, remove or reposition it first to avoid spills and ensure proper reservoir venting during bleeding.
Tools & supplies
- DOT-specified brake fluid (check reservoir cap/owner&s manual)
- Clear hose that fits bleed nipple and a clean catch bottle
- Turkey baster or syringe (to remove old fluid from reservoirs)
- Wrenches sized to the caliper bleeder nipples (usually 8mm or 10mm)
- Torque wrench for reinstalling fittings (if replacing lines)
- Brake bleeder kit or vacuum/pressure bleeder (optional but speeds job)
- Rags, safety glasses, nitrile gloves, drain pan
- Jack or ramps and stands to safely lift wheels if needed
Preparation
- Park on a level surface, engine off, key removed. Secure the ATV with blocks to prevent movement.
- Clean around each reservoir cap to prevent contamination. Remove caps to inspect fluid color and level. Note the DOT rating printed on the cap.
- If fluid is dark or contaminated, plan to fully flush and replace. Use a turkey baster to remove as much old fluid from each reservoir as possible before adding new fluid.
- Protect painted surfaces from spilled fluid—brake fluid can damage plastic and paint.
Bleed & replace procedure two-person manual bleed (recommended if you don&t have a bleeder tool)
- Top reservoirs with fresh DOT-specified fluid, but don&t overfill. Keep caps loosely in place or use a clean rag to reduce air entry.
- Start with the furthest caliper from the master cylinder (typically right rear, then left rear, right front, left front). If unsure, follow manufacturer order printed in the manual.
- Fit clear hose onto the caliper bleed nipple and submerge the other end in a small bottle part-filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
- Have an assistant sit on the ATV to apply steady brake pressure or hold the brake lever/pedal while you open and close the bleed nipple. If using the lever, hold it depressed; if using pedal, maintain a steady press.
- With the lever depressed, open the bleed nipple about a quarter turn. Fluid and air bubbles will flow into the hose. Close the nipple before the assistant releases the lever/pedal. Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid runs and no air remains.
- Keep reservoir topped during the entire process to avoid sucking air into the system.
- Proceed to the next caliper and repeat sequence. When finished, ensure reservoir fluid is at the specified fill mark and reinstall caps tightly.
Single-person alternatives
- Use a hand vacuum bleeder on the caliper bleed nipple to pull fluid while you operate the reservoir cap open and top off. Follow the bleeder tool manufacturer instructions.
- Pressure bleeder attached to the reservoir provides continuous pressure and pushes fluid through the system; this is fastest and minimizes air intrusion.
Complete fluid flush (when replacing all fluid)
- Remove old fluid from reservoirs and refill with fresh fluid.
- Bleed each caliper until clear fluid comes out, then move to the next. Repeat a second pass through all calipers to ensure system is fully purged.
- If you removed lines or replaced components, bench-bleed the master cylinder if possible before reinstalling.
Final checks & safety
- Clean all fittings and torque any banjo bolts per the component specification. If you don&t have torque specs, tighten to a firm, snug setting and recheck for leaks after initial test rides.
- Check lever/pedal feel. Brakes should be firm with no sponginess. If spongy, repeat bleeding until solid.
- Test brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal riding. Ensure brakes don&t grab or pull to one side.
- Dispose of used brake fluid responsibly; do not pour down drains or onto soil.
- Re-inspect for leaks after 24 hours of use and again after a short ride.
MotoSport maintenance tips specific to the Alterra MudPro 700
- Use fresh, OEM-equivalent brake components available through MotoSport when replacing pads, rotors or hoses. Matching quality maintains proper clearance and feel.
- Check the condition of caliper slide pins and lubricate with high-temp brake grease if applicable. Seized slides can cause uneven wear on the MudPro&s discs.
- If you do a lot of mud or water riding, inspect and replace brake fluid more frequently; water intrusion accelerates corrosion and reduces boiling point.
- Keep an eye on master cylinder boots and reservoir seals for cracking from UV and heat exposure on older machines.
Troubleshooting
- If air returns after bleeding, check for leaks at hoses, fittings, master cylinder seals or a cracked reservoir.
- Persistent sponginess after multiple bleeds may indicate a worn master cylinder or internal caliper leak; replace the faulty component.
- If brakes lock or grab after bleeding, re-check pad alignment, caliper mounting bolts and rotor condition.
Performing brake fluid replacement and bleeding carefully will keep your 2018 Textron Alterra MudPro 700 stopping strong and safe. When in doubt, consult a qualified technician or use MotoSport parts and service resources to keep your ride in top shape.
