How to Bleed & Replace Brake Fluid on a 2003 Honda TRX250 RECON ES

Overview & Safety
Brake fluid replacement and bleeding restores braking performance and removes moisture that causes corrosion & reduced boiling point. Work on a clean, level surface with the engine off and key removed. Wear eye protection & gloves. Keep brake fluid off paint & plastics – it damages finishes. Use only new DOT 3 brake fluid unless you prefer DOT 4; do not mix water with fluid.
What youll need
- New DOT 3 brake fluid (1 pint should be sufficient)
- Clear plastic tubing that fits snugly over bleed nipples
- Catch bottles or small jars
- Brake bleeder wrench or correct-size open wrench
- Hand vacuum pump or syringe (optional but speeds and cleans bleeding)
- Clean rags and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning
- Jack/stands or ramps to lift wheels if needed
Model-specific notes for the 2003 TRX250 RECON ES
- Confirm which brakes on your Recon are hydraulic. If a brake is cable-operated (mechanical drum), it does not need fluid bleeding.
- Master cylinder reservoir placement can be under a front cover or near the handlebar; identify it before starting. Keep reservoir cap clean when opened.
- The Recon ES uses single-circuit hydraulics for front and rear combined on some years — maintain fluid level during the entire procedure to avoid introducing air into the master cylinder.
- Bleed one wheel at a time and avoid opening more than one bleed nipple at once to prevent air draw-in.
Step-by-step: Replace fluid & bleed brakes
- Locate master cylinder reservoir and inspect fluid level & color. Old fluid is usually dark; replace it when contaminated or every 1-2 years.
- Clean around reservoir cap. Remove cap slowly, wipe inside of cap & top of reservoir then remove the old fluid from the reservoir with a syringe or turkey baster until nearly empty but leave a small amount to avoid sloshing in contaminants.
- Top reservoir with fresh DOT 3 fluid to the recommended level and re-install cap loosely so you can add fluid while bleeding.
- Identify bleed nipple locations at each hydraulic caliper or wheel cylinder. Fit clear tubing over a nipple and route into a catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
- Bleeding order: work from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder to the nearest. For most Recon layouts that means rear right, rear left, front right, front left. If unsure, test which wheel is farthest and adjust order accordingly.
- Have a helper slowly pump the brake lever/pedal several times and hold pressure, or use a one-person vacuum/pressure bleeder. While pressure is held, open the bleed nipple 1/4 turn to allow fluid and air out until flow slows, then close nipple before the helper releases pressure. Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid flows. Keep reservoir topped up between cycles.
- Work each wheel until you get firm brake lever/pedal feel and no air bubbles in the tubing. Do not let the reservoir run dry; this will reintroduce air into the system.
- After bleeding all hydraulic brakes, tighten each bleed nipple to spec snugness (do not over-torque). Clean any spilled fluid and reinstall the reservoir cap securely.
- Check brake lever/pedal travel & firmness. With the vehicle on the ground, perform slow-speed brake tests in a safe area to confirm proper operation before regular riding.
Tips, troubleshooting & maintenance
- If brakes remain spongy after bleeding, repeat the process. Inspect hoses & lines for cracks or collapsed sections that can trap air.
- If you suspect internal master cylinder or caliper failure, or if pedal travel is excessive, consult a qualified technician or refer to repair procedures specific to the Recon master cylinder rebuild.
- Dispose of old brake fluid per local hazardous-waste rules – do not pour down drains.
- Routine: inspect and replace brake fluid every 12-24 months depending on use & exposure to moisture.
