Bleeding the Brakes on a 2017 Ducati XDIAVEL S

The 2017 Ducati XDIAVEL S uses hydraulic disc brakes at both ends and is equipped with ABS. That means you have a front hydraulic circuit operated by the lever and a rear hydraulic circuit operated by the pedal, and both use brake fluid that needs periodic refreshing. There is no mechanical drum brake here to adjust instead of bleed. The ABS hardware does not change the basic caliper-level bleed used for routine fluid service, but it does matter if air has entered the ABS unit itself. If the reservoir has run dry, or if the ABS unit or its lines have been disconnected, the bike may need a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool to purge that trapped air. Do not try to invent an ABS bleed sequence at home.
When a Bleed Is Due
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can contribute to brake fade under hard use. Even if the lever still feels acceptable, many riders refresh fluid on a regular schedule as preventive maintenance. A bleed is also called for when the lever feels spongy or soft, when it pulls closer to the grip than it used to, when the pedal feels vague or long, or when the fluid in the reservoir looks dark or cloudy. Any job that opened the hydraulic system—new lines, caliper service, or master cylinder work—also creates a need to remove air before the bike is ridden normally.
Tools and Supplies to Have Ready
- Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the master cylinder reservoir cap, from a sealed container
- A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valve
- Clear tubing that fits snugly over the bleeder valve
- A small catch bottle for used fluid
- Rags or shop towels, plus a syringe or turkey baster for removing old fluid from the reservoir
- A screwdriver or driver that fits the reservoir cap screws
- Optional: a one-way check-valve bleeder or vacuum bleeder to make one-person bleeding easier
Use only fluid from a sealed container, and do not reuse fluid that has been sitting open or drained out of the system. Brake fluid is not a place to experiment with substitutions.
Prepare the Bike and Protect Sensitive Surfaces
Support the 2017 Ducati XDIAVEL S securely upright on a stand so it cannot tip while you are working the lever or pedal. Turn the handlebars so the front reservoir sits level before you open it. Cover painted surfaces, plastics, and the instrument area with rags, because most brake fluids damage paint and plastic on contact. If a spill happens, wipe it up immediately and rinse the area with water. Keep the catch bottle below the bleeder so fluid and air move out of the system rather than back into it.
Step-by-Step Bleeding Procedure
- Open the reservoir cap and remove the diaphragm. Use a syringe or turkey baster to remove most of the old fluid from the reservoir without letting the reservoir run dry.
- Refill the reservoir with fresh fluid of the type marked on the cap. Leave enough air space for the diaphragm and cap to seat later.
- Attach the clear tubing to the bleeder valve and route the other end into the catch bottle. Make sure the tubing fits snugly so air cannot sneak in around the bleeder.
- For the front brake, pump the lever a few times to build pressure, then squeeze and hold it against the grip. For the rear, press and hold the pedal.
- Open the bleeder valve about a quarter turn. You should see fluid and possibly air bubbles move through the clear tubing.
- Close the bleeder valve before releasing the lever or pedal. Releasing first can draw air back into the caliper.
- Repeat the squeeze-hold-open-close-release sequence until fresh, clean, bubble-free fluid comes through the tubing. Keep checking the reservoir and topping it off so it never runs low enough to draw air into the system.
- If the front end has more than one caliper, bleed one caliper at a time, then repeat the process on the other. As a general rule, start with the caliper farthest from the master cylinder.
- Move to the rear brake and use the same sequence with the pedal. Keep the rear reservoir topped off throughout.
- When the fluid runs clean and bubble-free at each bleeder, close the bleeder snugly without overtightening, then move on to the next point.
Finish the Job and Check for Leaks
Once bleeding is complete, fill the reservoir to the correct level marking, reinstall the diaphragm and cap, and clean any spilled fluid from the bike. Check the bleeder valves and the banjo fittings for weeping or wetness. A dry fitting after several lever or pedal applications is what you want to see. If fluid appears at a bleeder, snug it slightly more without overdoing it; if it appears at a banjo fitting, stop and have the connection inspected rather than riding with a leak.
Test Before Riding Normally
The lever and pedal should feel firm and consistent, not spongy, and they should not slowly sink under steady pressure. Spin each wheel and confirm the brakes are not dragging. Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before riding normally. If the lever or pedal changes feel after the test, or if either one needs pumping to come up, there is still air in the system or another problem that needs attention.
Troubleshooting and When to Visit a Shop
If the lever will not firm up after several bleeding attempts, if it firms only after pumping, if bubbles keep appearing, or if fluid is leaking from the master cylinder or caliper, stop and diagnose the problem rather than continuing to ride. Any situation where air may have entered the ABS unit—especially a reservoir that ran dry or ABS hardware that was disconnected—is best handled by a shop with the correct procedure and equipment. The same applies if you are not confident in your results. A properly bled 2017 Ducati XDIAVEL S should feel solid at both controls, with no surprises when you need the brakes most.
