These are pretty cool for the price. They make it a little tight to get the tire iron between the tire and wheel, but you're saving scratching the wheels.
These are thinner than my other rim protectors, and was the reason I purchased them. The part that makes them not "great", is that they don't "snap" and hold, like regular protectors and you're constantly having to pull them back on the rim edge until you get them wedged between the bead and rim.
I have black Excel rims on my Yz250. Picked these up thinking the concept made sense to protect the wheel. Here's the deal... These things are decently made but you need more than just the two. You probably need at least 4 or 5, otherwise there is too much tension and the wheel will trap the rim shield preventing you from being able to remove it.
For example.. you want to start taking the tire off. You place two rim shields near each other. Place the first tire spoon and pull up. Place the second tire spoon and pull up. Now place the third tire spoon and pull up. The problem now is that the tire is still under tension and your rim shields are now trapped under the tension of the spoon and tire. The next place for your tire spoon is bare and unprotected, and because both shields are stuck, you can't use either of them for the next bite. Until the tire tension is relieved (which requires getting far enough along the rim), those shields are stuck and you can't remove them.
I would estimate that you cannot get the job done without at least 4 of these. So if you want to save your rims, buy at least two pair. For me, though, at $15 bucks a piece i'd rather just save my money and scratch the rims. My next tire change will not be using them. Also, they are made out of heavy duty plastic but I can't seen these things holding up for more than a couple tire changes. Just my thoughts. Again, though, buy at least two pair if you want to use these correctly.
I've used a similar product from several other brands and this has been the most durable so far. Other products are lucky to last more than one tire change.
Dinged the wheel up a bit first time around so picked some of these up. Don't have that problem anymore. Easy to use and good quality.
These will help but not prevent scratching rims. They work OK however, it takes some getting used to placing them in the right spot. The plastic lip is a bit tall, making it difficult to remove the protectors when the bead is getting tighter. When mounting the tire, I could not use them on the last 2 bites.
For street tire installation, make sure to have the tire balanced after tire installation.
