  • 8mm socket or wrench
  • Drain pan

Step-by-Step Coolant Change Guide

  1. Let the engine cool completely.
    Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot–dangerous steam and fluid can be expelled with high pressure. Wait until the engine is cool to the touch.
  2. Remove the seat and shrouds if needed.
    This will give better access to the radiator cap and radiator. The RM85L’s slim frame allows for fairly easy access, but shroud removal can make the job easier. Use an 8mm socket for bolts as required.
  3. Place the bike on a stand and position the drain pan.
    Keep the bike upright and steady–this allows for complete draining.
  4. Remove the radiator cap.
    Twist off the radiator cap slowly to relieve any built-up pressure.
  5. Locate and remove the coolant drain bolt.
    Find the coolant drain bolt at the bottom of the water pump (right side of the engine). Use your 8mm socket to remove it. Allow the coolant to drain completely into your pan.
  6. Flush the system (optional but recommended).
    For best results, pour some distilled water into the radiator and let it flow out to flush any old coolant or debris. Replace the drain bolt securely afterward.
  7. Inspect the drain bolt and sealing washer.
    Check for signs of corrosion or abnormal buildup. Replace the washer if it’s damaged to prevent leaks.
  8. Refill with fresh coolant.
    Using a funnel, pour OEM-approved coolant into the radiator until the fluid reaches the bottom of the filler neck. After filling, install the radiator cap loosely.
  9. Bleed the air from the cooling system.
    Run the engine at idle for several minutes (radiator cap off) while gently rocking the bike and blipping the throttle. This encourages trapped air to escape. Top off the radiator as needed. Once the air is out and no more bubbles rise, fill the radiator to the proper level and fully secure the cap.
  10. Top off the overflow reservoir.
    Fill to the "FULL" mark on the reservoir (if equipped).
  11. Check for leaks and reassemble plastics.
    Inspect all connections, bolts, and the underside for leaks. Reinstall your shrouds and seat.
