The 2017 Honda CRF450R was a ground-up redesign—the most significant overhaul the platform had received since the 2006 aluminum frame introduction. Honda completely reworked the engine with a unicam layout (a return to a single overhead cam approach after years with DOHC), a new launch control system, an electric starter, and a substantially revised frame and subframe architecture. The 2017 CRF450R is effectively a new motorcycle, and its torque specifications reflect that.

Engine Fasteners

The 2017 CRF450R’s new unicam cylinder head uses a different bolt pattern and fastener architecture than the 2016 DOHC head. The unicam layout eliminates the separate exhaust cam cover and intake cam cover of the prior DOHC design, consolidating valve train access into a single cam cover. The cam cover bolts on the 2017 unicam head are a critical regular service point for valve clearance checks.

Engine ComponentTorque Spec
Spark plug18–22 Nm (13–16 ft-lb)
Oil drain plug29–35 Nm (21–26 ft-lb)
Cylinder head bolts (8mm)40–48 Nm (30–35 ft-lb)
Cylinder head bolts (6mm)12–15 Nm (9–11 ft-lb)
Cam sprocket bolt35–45 Nm (26–33 ft-lb)
Flywheel bolt85–100 Nm (63–74 ft-lb)
Clutch hub nut85–100 Nm (63–74 ft-lb)

The 2017 CRF450R’s electric starter adds a starter motor mounting flange to the left crankcase. Starter motor bolts are a new service point on this generation that didn’t exist on kick-start-only predecessors. Loose starter motor mounts cause gear whine and eventual starter gear damage.

Chassis and Suspension

The 2017 CRF450R introduced a new steel perimeter frame with significantly revised geometry compared to the 2015–2016 aluminum platform. The new frame uses more traditional steel construction for improved flex characteristics, and the revised frame geometry changes the steering head angle, swingarm pivot location, and rear suspension mounting points relative to the prior generation.
