The 1998 KTM 380MXC applied the 380cc two-stroke engine to the cross-country motocross format. The additional displacement over the 360MXC delivered more bottom-end torque for better traction management in varied cross-country terrain while maintaining the overall package size and weight of the 360cc machine.
Engine Torque Specifications
Engine fastener torque is consistent with the 380EXC enduro variant. The MXC cross-country engine is mechanically identical to the EXC unit, differing only in power valve and ignition mapping.
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | Clean threads; seat by hand before torquing |
| Cylinder head bolts/nuts | 25 – 30 Nm (18 – 22 ft-lb) | Two-pass crisscross sequence; new gasket |
| Cylinder base nuts | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | New base gasket each removal |
| Flywheel rotor nut | 45 – 50 Nm (33 – 37 ft-lb) | Thread locker; holding tool required |
| Clutch hub nut | 60 – 70 Nm (44 – 52 ft-lb) | Thread locker; stake after torquing |
| Power valve cover bolts | 8 – 10 Nm (6 – 7 ft-lb) | Do not overtorque aluminum cover |
Drivetrain & Wheel Torque Specifications
Cross-country drivetrain torque specifications consistent with the 380EXC. Chain tension management is important over full cross-country race distances.
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Front axle nut | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | Torque lower leg pinch bolts after axle seated |
| Rear axle nut | 70 – 80 Nm (52 – 59 ft-lb) | Verify chain alignment before final torque |
| Rear sprocket bolts | 35 – 40 Nm (26 – 30 ft-lb) | Medium-strength thread locker |
| Chain adjuster lock nuts | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | Equal alignment marks both sides |
Suspension & Chassis Torque Specifications
MXC suspension is tuned differently from the EXC but uses identical pivot fastener torque specifications. Inspect all hardware before assembly.
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower fork clamp bolts | 15 – 17 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Tighten before upper clamps |
| Upper fork clamp bolts | 15 – 17 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Tighten after lower clamps set |
| Handlebar clamp bolts | 20 – 22 Nm (15 – 16 ft-lb) | Front bolts first; center bar before torquing |
| Swingarm pivot bolt | 60 – 70 Nm (44 – 52 ft-lb) | Grease bearings; confirm free rotation |
| Rear shock linkage bolts | 50 – 60 Nm (37 – 44 ft-lb) | Replace worn bearings before reassembly |
Brake System Torque Specifications
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Front brake caliper bolts | 25 – 30 Nm (18 – 22 ft-lb) | Check slide pin movement after torquing |
| Rear brake caliper bolts | 25 – 30 Nm (18 – 22 ft-lb) | Thread locker; verify rotor clearance |
| Front brake disc bolts | 15 – 18 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Thread locker; star pattern |
| Rear brake disc bolts | 15 – 18 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Thread locker; replace corroded bolts |
Dry vs. Wet Torque
All listed values are dry torque for clean, unlubricated threads. At the swingarm pivot and rear shock linkage, apply grease to bearing surfaces (not bolt threads) and target the lower end of the range. Confirm smooth, drag-free bearing rotation after tightening.
Thread Locker Guide
- Medium-strength (blue): sprocket bolts, brake disc bolts, rear caliper bolts, flywheel nut
- Clutch hub nut: thread locker plus mechanical staking
- No thread locker: cylinder head, axle hardware, fork clamps, handlebar clamps
- Anti-seize: exhaust mounting hardware only
Torque Wrench Selection
A click-type torque wrench in the 10–80 Nm range covers all major chassis, drivetrain, and engine fasteners. A compact 5–25 Nm wrench adds precision for power valve cover bolts and other small engine fasteners. Calibrate tools annually.
