Swapping the Fuel Line on Your 2012 Yamaha PW50

A cracked fuel line seems trivial until it strands you at the far end of a trail or drips onto a hot pipe. On a 2012 Yamaha PW50, the fuel line is a short, inexpensive piece of rubber doing a job with zero tolerance for failure — and replacing it is well within reach with basic hand tools and about half an hour.
What You Are Working With on the PW50
The fuel system on your 2012 Yamaha PW50 uses a carburetor, and the petcock is your shutoff. Fuel flows by gravity alone from tank to float bowl through one hose, secured at each end by a spring pinch clamp or a small screw clamp. That is the whole circuit, and it is why this job is beginner-friendly on a two-stroke machine.
Symptoms Worth Catching Early
A fuel line rarely fails without hinting first. Run through this list before loading the PW50 up, particularly if the bike has been sitting.
- Fuel staining at either fitting. Seepage shows up at the barbs before anywhere else.
- Persistent gasoline smell. If you smell fuel with the bike cold and untouched, something is leaking.
- Cracks that appear when you flex the hose. Dry rot hides at rest and reveals itself the moment rubber bends.
- Swelling or a soft, mushy section. The opposite of hardening and just as bad — usually chemical attack.
- Surging or dying under load. Restricted flow mimics fuel starvation and gets misdiagnosed as a jetting problem.
Why This Part Wears Out at All
Rubber fuel line fails for reasons that have little to do with how hard you ride. Age drives it: the plasticizers keeping the hose flexible slowly migrate out, and pliable rubber turns stiff and glassy, so a small flex — bolting the tank down, rocking the bike onto a stand — opens a hairline crack. Dry, hot storage accelerates that, pulling volatiles out faster than a temperate garage would. Ethanol-blended pump fuel left sitting in the hose adds a second mechanism, attacking the inner wall and leaving gum that can flake into the fuel path on a 2012 Yamaha PW50.
What to Have on the Bench
The parts list is short and the tool list shorter. Lay it out before breaking the first connection.
- Replacement fuel line in the correct inside diameter and length for your 2012 Yamaha PW50. Match the original rather than guessing — oversized line will not seal on the barb.
- New clamps. Spring clamps lose tension with age, and a small clamp kit costs very little.
- Nitrile or rubber gloves. Gasoline absorbs through skin.
- A fuel-safe drain container and a funnel if you plan to reuse the fuel.
- Pliers and a small flat screwdriver for spring and screw clamps respectively.
- Shop rags and eye protection.
A word on handling fuel, because this is the part with real consequences: gasoline vapor is heavier than air and will travel across a floor to any spark or flame. Open the door, shut off pilot lights, cap your container, and let the bike cool. Gloves and eye protection are not optional.
Taking the Failed Hose Off
Close the petcock. Everything downstream of that valve is the only fuel you need to deal with, which on a 2012 Yamaha PW50 amounts to a few ounces in the line and float bowl.
Get that remaining fuel into a container rather than onto the floor. The float bowl drain screw is purpose-built for this — slip a hose over the nipple, aim it into your catch can, and crack the screw open. If you would rather drain the whole tank, do it now with the hose routed into the container.
Then release both clamps and work the hose off the fittings. Pliers handle spring clamps; a flat screwdriver handles screw clamps. Slide each clamp well back so it cannot fight you. To separate a stubborn hose from a barb, rotate it a quarter turn to shear the bond before pulling. If the rubber has gone hard enough that it will not release, split it with a knife along its length — the hose is being replaced anyway, and the fittings are what matter.
Putting the Fresh Hose On
Measure the replacement against the old line before cutting. Matching the original length keeps routing correct on the PW50, and a square cut gives the clamp a clean surface to seal against. Trim with a fresh blade rather than dull side cutters.
Slide the hose fully onto the tank-side fitting, past the barb and up against the shoulder. If the rubber resists, soften it in hot water; do not reach for lubricant. Grease or oil on a fuel fitting shows up later as a slow weep and can carry contamination into the carburetor.
Attach the carburetor end and check the shape of the run. The hose should follow the original path with no contact against cylinder or exhaust and no kink where it curves. Install fresh clamps over the fitting area rather than out on bare hose, and tighten only until the rubber is compressed — a screw clamp cranked down hard will eventually cut through.
Leak Check Before You Ride
With the new line in place, open the petcock and stop. Let the 2012 Yamaha PW50 sit five minutes over a clean surface and use that time to examine both joints under a flashlight. A properly seated hose stays completely dry; anything else needs attention before the wheels turn.
The running test comes second. Fire the engine, let it warm, and look again — expansion and vibration find seals that hold fine cold and still. When you find a weep, resist the urge to overtighten. Disconnect, verify the hose is pushed fully over the barb, and reassemble; that is nearly always the actual problem.
Wrap up by disposing of the drained fuel appropriately and taking another look at the connections after your next ride.
