How the Fuel Line Comes Off and Goes Back On — 1989 Yamaha YZ250

Two things degrade a fuel line: time, and what sits inside it. Working the Original Hose Free

Getting the New Line Seated Properly
Trim the replacement to the same length as the original. Guessing causes problems at both ends of the range — excess hose finds something hot to lean against, and a short hose loads the fittings every time the engine moves. Cut cleanly and squarely.
Fit the tank-side end first, sliding the hose past the full barb until it bottoms out. If the line is stiff from sitting on a shelf, dip the end in hot water. Do not lubricate: no grease, no oil, no assembly lube on a fuel fitting. Beyond weakening the seal, it introduces contamination into the fuel your YZ250 is about to run.
Connect the carburetor end and look at the whole run before securing anything. The hose should mirror the factory routing with clearance from the exhaust and no kinks. Then set both clamps directly over the barbed sections and tighten just enough to compress the rubber. Over-torquing a screw clamp scores the hose and creates a leak path over time.
Confirming It Is Sealed
Open the fuel valve and let gravity do the testing. Give the YZ250 a few minutes standing over clean cardboard, then inspect the tank-side and carburetor-side joints carefully. Wipe each dry first so new moisture is unmistakable.
Follow that with a running check. Start the engine, bring it to temperature, and look at both fittings again at idle — some leaks only appear once heat and vibration are in the system. A joint weeping under those conditions has a seating problem, not a clamp problem; pull it apart and push the hose fully home.
Then clean up and stay attentive for a ride or two. Dispose of old fuel properly, watch the clamps as the new rubber settles, and consider replacing an inline filter while the system is open.
