How To Install a Clutch Kit on a 2011 Husqvarna TE310
Shop parts for a 2011 Husqvarna TE310 Dirt Bike. The 2011 Husqvarna TE310 is a 310cc enduro machine built for trail and woods work where frequent clutch modulation is part of the ride. Its wet multiplate clutch uses a cable actuation on this generation, so clutch wear commonly shows up as slipping, dragging, inconsistent lever feel, or hard shifting. Replacing the clutch kit restores direct power transfer, crisp throttle response and predictable engagement crucial for technical trail riding and hard launches.
Why replace the clutch?
- Slipping under load or on acceleration despite correct cable free play.
- Dragging or slow disengagement that makes shifting noisy or difficult.
- Inconsistent lever feel, or a lever that changes engagement point after a few runs.
- Steel plates heatdiscolorized or warped from sand, heavy use, or wrong oil.
Tools & parts
- Replacement clutch kit (friction plates, steel drive plates, springs)
- Metric sockets & ratchet, torque wrench (use manufacturer guidance elsewhere for torque values)
- Screwdrivers, pick set, soft hammer
- Drain pan & engine oil for refill, clean rags
- Clutch holding tool or method to lock the basket while loosening the center nut
- New gaskets or crush washers as needed
Preparation
Park the TE310 on a level surface with the bike securely supported. Clean the clutch cover area to keep debris out of the case when you open it. Because this is a wet clutch, drain the engine oil if the cover design requires it for removal; otherwise position a drain pan under the clutch cover to catch residual oil. Loosen the clutch cable free play at the lever so the plates can separate easily once the cover is off.
Removing the clutch cover
- Remove any plastics or frame parts blocking cover access.
- Loosen and remove the cover bolts in a crisscross pattern to prevent distortion.
- Carefully remove the cover some oil will drain. Keep the cover face up to avoid spilling the gasket area.
Disassembling the clutch
- With the cover off, note the order of components or photograph for reference.
- Loosen the clutch spring bolts evenly in several passes to relieve pressure on the pressure plate.
- Remove the springs and pressure plate. Slide out the friction and steel plates one by one, keeping them in order if you want to compare old vs new wear patterns.
Inspection checklist
- Friction plates look for glazing, thinness, or burned surfaces. Excessive glazing reduces bite; heavy wear reduces thickness.
- Steel plates check for blueing/discoloration and feel for warpage by laying them on a flat surface and rocking gently.
- Clutch basket & hub inspect basket fingers for notching where plates engage; any deep notches make grabbing and inconsistent engagement likely.
- Inner hub splines confirm the splines are not rounded or excessively worn, which can allow plates to slip on the hub.
- Thrust washer & pushrod inspect for wear, scoring, or excessive play; ensure the pushrod moves freely and springs back.
- Springs compare free length and straightness with new springs; weak springs reduce clamp force and cause slipping.
- Oil condition presence of metal particles, burnt smell, or dirty oil can accelerate clutch wear; plan to replace oil.
Preparing new plates
Because the TE310 uses a wet clutch, soak new friction plates in fresh engine oil for at least 15-30 minutes to allow the fibers to absorb oil. This reduces initial grabbing and premature wear. Clean the steel plates and stack them to ensure there's no binding between plates before installation.
Installing the clutch kit
- Start by installing the inner hub and any thrust washers in their proper positions if removed.
- Install plates in the correct alternating order friction plate, steel plate, friction plate, etc. End with the plate type required by the clutch pack orientation on your TE310.
- Make sure each plate seats fully into the basket fingers and hub splines. Rotate the basket slightly as you stack plates to ensure alignment and to reduce the chance of pinched plates.
- Reinstall the pressure plate and evenly thread in the spring bolts. Tighten springs gradually in a crisscross pattern so the pressure plate remains parallel; this ensures even clamp when tightened.
Reassembly and fluids
- Clean mating surfaces on the clutch cover and case, install a new gasket if required, and reattach the clutch cover bolts evenly.
- Refill engine oil with the correct spec and quantity for the TE310. Fresh oil ensures proper clutch lubrication and cooling.
Clutch cable adjustment & final checks
Adjust the clutch cable free play at the lever to the recommended light free play for the TE310 enough to allow full engagement but avoid excessive slack. Because this model uses a cable clutch, check the cable for smooth movement along its routing and lubricate or replace if you find binding or fraying. If lever feel still varies after adjustment, recheck plate installation and spring seating.
Test ride & followup
- On a short lowspeed ride, test clutch engagement points across gears and RPM ranges. Expect a short beddingin period as plates mate.
- Listen for chatter, grabbing, or slipping. If any of those persist, recheck basket notching, hub spline wear, and spring seating.
- After the first ride, recheck cable free play and oil level & condition. Some small oil topoffs or adjustments are normal after initial breakin.
Notes on riding conditions & clutch life
On a 310cc enduro like the TE310, aggressive launches, tight woods work, sand, and highheat environments speed clutch wear. Consistent oil changes with a quality oil formulated for wet clutches and periodic cable inspection will extend service life. Proper installation not only fixes immediate problems but restores smooth power delivery and reliable shift quality that make technical riding more predictable and enjoyable.
