How to Change the Coolant in a 2007 Suzuki RMZ250

What You Need
- Fresh, recommended engine coolant (50:50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water)
- Drain pan
- 8mm socket/wrench (for drain bolt)
- Flathead screwdriver or 10mm socket (for radiator cap and panels if necessary)
- New drain bolt gasket washer (required for reassembly)
- Shop towels
- Safety gloves and eye protection
Before You Begin
- Only work on the cooling system once the engine is fully cool. Hot coolant can cause serious burns.
- This model does not have an overflow reservoir. It is normal for some coolant to be consumed during rides—always check the level before heading out.
Step-by-Step Coolant Replacement

Remove the Radiator Cap
On the left side of the bike, unscrew the radiator cap. If your plastics or tank obstruct access, remove the seat and side panels as needed. -
Drain the Old Coolant
Locate the coolant drain bolt on the bottom of the water pump cover. Place your drain pan under the bolt. Remove the bolt (8mm) and allow coolant to fully drain. -
Inspect and Replace Drain Gasket
The gasket washer on the drain bolt must be replaced each time to ensure a proper seal and avoid leaks. -
Reinstall the Drain Bolt
Torque to 11 N·m (8.0 lbf-ft). Do not over-tighten. -
Add New Coolant
Loosen the small air bleeder bolt on top of the cylinder head to help any trapped air escape. Pour coolant (max. 950 ml) into the radiator until it reaches the bottom of the inlet. As it fills, gently rock the bike to release air bubbles. Tighten the bleeder when coolant starts to escape from it. -
Final Checks
Reinstall the radiator cap firmly. Start and idle the bike briefly, then check the coolant level again once cool—top up if needed.

- The RMZ250 may lose coolant faster than street bikes due to the lack of an overflow tank. Always check levels before every ride for optimal engine cooling.
- Only use properly mixed engine coolant (not just water)—a 50:50 pre-mix of antifreeze and distilled water. For riders in extremely cold climates, increase antifreeze content up to 60 percent.
- After coolant changes, watch for any leaks at the drain bolt or cap; improper installation can result in overheating.
