Steps to Change Coolant
- Engine Cooldown: Ensure the bike is cool to the touch. Never open the radiator cap while hot to avoid injury from pressurized steam and hot coolant.
- Remove Panels for Access: Use an 8mm socket to loosen and remove the left side panel for access to the overflow reservoir. You may also need to remove the front right fender or shroud to reach the radiator cap and hoses, depending on your setup.
- Drain Old Coolant:
- Place the drain pan under the water pump area (lower right engine side).
- Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover. Using a 10mm socket, slowly loosen and remove the bolt. Coolant will begin to drain.
- Remove the radiator cap – this allows coolant to drain more quickly & completely.
- Don't forget to empty the overflow reservoir as well. If required, disconnect the hose at the bottom and let it drain.
- Flush System (Recommended):
- Replace the drain bolt temporarily and fill the system with distilled water.
- Reinstall the radiator cap. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute, then shut off.
- Drain the water the same way as before. Repeat this flush until the water runs clear. Remove drain bolt and cap each time.
- Add New Coolant:
- Install and tighten the drain bolt (torque: 10 N–m if you use a torque wrench).
- Slowly fill the radiator with new coolant up to the filler neck, using a funnel for control.
- Fill the overflow reservoir to the full mark.
- Remove Air:
- With the bike upright, gently rock it side-to-side to encourage air bubbles to rise.
- Start the engine and let it idle, periodically revving gently to help expel trapped air. Watch for bubbles escaping through the radiator neck.
- Top off coolant if the level drops, then re-install and secure the radiator cap.
- Reassemble and Inspect: Reinstall panels and fasteners. Start the engine, check for leaks (especially around the drain bolt and hoses), and verify coolant levels once fully cooled down again.
