How to Change the Coolant in a 2002 Suzuki DRZ400E

Maintaining the cooling system of your 2002 Suzuki DRZ400E is essential for engine longevity and peak performance. Performing a coolant change isn't difficult, but following the right steps is crucial for a proper job as well as for the unique requirements of this model.
What You Need
- Pre-mixed motorcycle coolant or a coolant and distilled water mix (50/50, never use plain tap water as it can cause mineral buildup in the system)
- Socket set (commonly 8mm or 10mm and 12mm)
- Flathead or Phillips screwdriver
- Rags and a drain pan
- Safety gear
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Preparation
- Make sure the engine is completely cool before starting service to avoid burn injuries.
- Place your dirt bike on a stand and remove the skid plate or lower plastic if needed for access to the water pump cover.
2. Remove Radiator Cap
- Locate the small screw securing the radiator cap and remove it.
- With the engine cool, remove the cap to release any internal pressure.
3. Drain Old Coolant
- Locate the coolant drain bolt on the water pump cover (usually 10mm hex head) on the right side of the engine, near the bottom.
- Place a drain pan under the bolt. Loosen and remove the bolt carefully, allowing coolant to fully drain. Remove the sealing washer and inspect itreplace if damaged.
4. Flushing the System (Recommended)
- If the coolant is dirty or if you want a thorough flush, pour distilled water into the radiator fill neck and allow it to flush through the system. Repeat until the drained water runs clear.
- Do not use plain water for riding—it does not protect against freezing, boiling, or corrosion.
5. Reinstall Drain Bolt
- Replace the drain bolt with the sealing washer. Tighten snugly but do not overtighten as the threads in the pump cover can strip easily.
6. Bleeding Air from the System
- Some DRZ400E models feature a bleeder screw on the water neck at the top front of the cylinder head. Loosen it a few turns to allow trapped air to escape during refilling–check your bike as some 2002 models do not have this screw if the water neck points straight up.
- There may also be an air bleed screw on top of the left radiator. Loosen this as you fill to help air escape and improve fill speed.
7. Refill with Coolant
- Slowly fill the right side radiator with pre-mixed coolant.
- As air escapes from the bleeder screws, add coolant until no more bubbles appear and spillover coolant flows from the bleed screw holes.
- Tighten the bleed screws gently once coolant flows steadily with no air pockets.
- Continue adding coolant until the radiator is full.
8. Check and Finalize
- Reinstall the radiator cap and ensure the overflow reservoir is filled to the correct level.
- Start the engine and let it idle. With the bike upright, watch for air bubbles in the overflow or gurgling—an occasional brief rev can help purge trapped air.
- Stop the engine, let it cool, and recheck the coolant level. Top off if necessary.
- Reinstall any removed parts.
2002 DRZ400E Owner Notes
- This model does not use a thermostat from the factory, so warm-ups can take a bit longer, especially after a full flush.
- Some units may lack the air bleed screw on the water neck; if yours does, carefully fill and periodically rock the motorcycle side-to-side to help release air pockets.
- If replacing the radiator cap, use one rated for the DRZ400E to preserve proper pressure.
- Always dispose of old coolant safely—ethylene glycol is toxic to people and pets.
Proper coolant management will protect your engine, especially under harsh trail conditions. Checking coolant at every oil change is an excellent habit for your DRZ400E.
