Shop parts for a 2015 Suzuki DR650SE Dirt Bike.

The Suzuki DR650SE is known for its rugged reliability, making regular air filter maintenance essential for peak performance. Neglect can lead to reduced power and increased fuel consumption, especially on this single-cylinder dual-sport. Owners should pay particular attention to the unique filter design and the secondary crankcase breather filter.

When to Service Your Air Filter

  • Check & clean every 3,000 km (about 2,000 miles), or sooner if riding in dusty conditions.
  • If the foam shows damage, tears, or rips, replace the filter immediately to prevent engine harm.

Tools – Supplies Needed

  • Non-flammable cleaning solvent
  • Motor oil or specific air filter oil
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Clean rags

Air Filter Removal – Cleaning Procedure

  1. Remove the left frame cover to access the airbox.
  2. Unscrew – remove the air cleaner case cover.
  3. Remove the filter support screw, then carefully slide the air filter element out.
  4. Separate the polyurethane foam element from its frame – inspect for tears, worn seams, or deformation.
  5. Immerse the filter in non-flammable cleaning solvent. Gently agitate to release dirt. Press (don't wring) to squeeze out solvent.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with warm water if needed. Let dry completely overnight.
  7. Soak the clean filter in motor oil or quality air filter oil; squeeze (don't twist) until slightly damp all over.
  8. Check all pleats for uniform coverage, especially on the crowns. Wait 20 minutes before checking coverage again.
  9. Reinstall filter on frame. Make sure "UP" marking faces up. Fat side faces the airbox opening.
  10. Reinsert filter and support screw. Be gentle to avoid damaging the foam and ensure proper seating. For the retaining clip, insert with the cup facing up for easier installation. Confirm airtight fit.
  11. Wipe inside of airbox if dusty before closing.

Important Model-Specific Notes

  • The DR650SE uses a secondary crankcase breather filter housed under the tank. Inspect – clean as needed. If replacing, secure with a small zip-tie to the harness – do not reuse old hose holders or let it contact the airbox opening.
  • Air filter orientation matters: the pointed end faces the right (throttle side), and the foam cage frames the filter against the airbox to form a proper seal.
  • Use grease around the airbox opening for a better seal after filter installation.

Replacing the Air Filter

  • If the filter frame is cracked, or the foam is worn thin, buy a new air filter element compatible with the 2015 DR650SE.
  • Install per steps above, ensuring correct orientation and seal.

Why This Matters for the DR650SE

  • The DR650SE's airbox is designed to maximize dirt exclusion – improper seating or damaged filters can undermine this, leading to expensive engine repairs. Always inspect for deformation after cleaning, and don't reuse filters showing significant wear.

For best performance, inspect more often if you ride on dusty trails – it's the most vital maintenance for your DR650SE's long life and adventure reliability.
