Air Filter Cleaning & Replacement Guide for 2002 Kawasaki KX100

Shop parts for a 2002 Kawasaki KX100 Dirt Bike.

The 2002 Kawasaki KX100 relies on a foam air filter to protect its high-strung two-stroke engine from dust & debris. Maintaining a clean, properly oiled filter ensures maximum engine performance, throttle response – and helps prevent costly damage. Follow this proprietary MotoSport guide for proper cleaning, inspection, & replacement specific to your KX100.

Unique Notes for the 2002 KX100

  • The KX100 uses a dual-stage foam filter for optimal filtration & airflow. The engine produces notable power for its class, making clean air intake absolutely critical to avoid premature wear.
  • The filter mount uses a single wing-nut for fast removal. Always ensure this nut is snug – loose mounting can allow dirt past the seal.
  • The KX100 shares its airbox architecture with the KX85, so procedures are nearly identical across years and models.

Tools & Products Needed

  • High-quality foam air filter oil
  • Non-flammable, specifically formulated filter cleaner
  • Clean towels
  • Nitrile gloves (optional but recommended)
  • 8mm socket or wrench (for seat removal)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Instructions

  1. Remove the seat using an 8mm socket. Undo the two bolts at the rear of the seat.
  2. Take out the air filter by loosening the plastic wing nut. Gently pull the filter from the airbox.
Note: Use caution to avoid dropping dirt into the intake tract; stuff a clean, lint-free towel in the intake opening for protection.
  3. Inspect the filter for tears, brittle foam, or loose glue. If damaged, replace the filter immediately. Never reuse a compromised filter.
  4. Pre-clean the filter by brushing off large debris. Avoid shaking or tapping the filter against hard surfaces to prevent damage.
  5. Wash the filter with proper filter cleaner or mild dish soap in warm water. Avoid gasoline or low flash-point solvents, as these are hazardous and deteriorate foam/glue rapidly.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Squeeze dry using a towel – do not wring, which can tear the foam.
  7. Dry the filter completely. Never install a damp filter, as this can affect filtration and let debris through.
  8. Saturate the foam in air filter oil. Massage oil evenly throughout every cell of the foam. Squeeze out excess so oil doesn’t drip – but every part must be coated for effective filtration.
  9. Clean the airbox with a damp towel. Wipe away dust & check for debris. Also inspect the intake tract & carburetor. Replace the filter only into a clean airbox.
  10. Reinstall the filter, lining up the plastic center guide. Secure the wing nut finger-tight; don’t overtighten. Double check the seal all the way around the filter.
  11. Reinstall the seat securely.

Replacement & Service Interval

  • Replace your air filter at least once each season, or after roughly 10 cleans. Racing or dusty conditions may require more frequent changes.
  • Always keep an oiled spare filter in a resealable bag for quick swaps on big ride days.

Expert Tips for Your KX100

  • Inspect the breather hoses for cracks and ensure perfect routing without kinks. Old, hardened, or swollen hoses should be replaced immediately for optimal engine breathing.
  • Some riders apply a thin layer of waterproof grease around the filter rim for a tighter seal. While not strictly necessary for the KX100, those riding in ultra-dusty or sandy environments may benefit.
  • Never run the engine without the filter – even for a quick start. Severe damage can happen instantly.

Keeping your 2002 KX100's air filter in top shape preserves power, reliability & peace of mind every ride. For OEM replacement filters, premium upgrade options, and everything else for your unique KX100, MotoSport has the parts & expertise you need.
