This MotoSport-exclusive service guide walks you step-by-step through draining, flushing, and bleeding the brake system on a 2012 Can-Am Outlander MAX 800R (MMY OLM800R). Follow these directions carefully to preserve braking performance and avoid contamination of the hydraulic system.
What you need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (fresh, unopened)
- Clear plastic tubing that fits bleeder nipples
- Catch bottle for used fluid
- Disposable gloves, shop rags, safety glasses
- Brake bleeder pump or vacuum pump OR a helper for manual pedal/lever pumping
- 10 mm wrench (bleeder nipple) and appropriate tools to remove wheel panels as needed
- Torque wrench for caliper fasteners if you remove calipers
- Brake parts cleaner for spilled fluid
Important model notes for the 2012 Can-Am Outlander MAX 800R
- The Outlander MAX 800R uses a hydraulic braking system that accepts DOT 4 fluid. Do not mix DOT 5 silicone fluid with DOT 4.
- This model may have linked braking between front and rear circuits depending on trim and aftermarket changes. If you suspect a modified braking system or factory ABS hardware, consult a dealer before performing service.
- Reservoir location is on the handlebar master cylinder for the front/hand brake and a separate reservoir for the rear/foot brake on some configurations. Keep caps clean to avoid contamination when open.
- Brake fluid eats paint and plastic – protect bodywork and clean spills immediately with brake parts cleaner and water.
- If calipers or hoses appear damaged, replace parts before bleeding. Use MotoSport-supplied OEM or equivalent replacement parts when possible.
Preparation
- Park the ATV on level ground, secure with the parking brake off for rear bleeding steps where specified, and place on a stand that keeps wheels clear if you need wheel access.
- Remove any panels that obstruct access to bleeder nipples and reservoirs.
- Clean the reservoir caps and surrounding area. Remove the caps and cover the opening with a clean rag while you work to reduce dust entry.
- Top the reservoirs with fresh DOT 4 fluid to the max line. Keep the cap loosely installed between steps to prevent debris entry.
Bleeding strategy & order
Bleed the system starting with the caliper furthest from the master cylinder, progressing to the closest. On the MAX 800R this typically means:
- Rear caliper farthest from the master cylinder (often rear right)
- Rear caliper nearest the master cylinder (often rear left)
- Front caliper farthest from master cylinder (usually front right)
- Front caliper nearest master cylinder (usually front left)
If your machine uses a single combined reservoir for front & rear circuits, follow the same furthest-to-closest logic per circuit. If unsure, verify hose routing to determine which caliper is furthest.
Bleeding methods
Method A: Vacuum or pressure bleeder (recommended)
- Attach clear tubing to the caliper bleeder nipple and place the other end into a catch bottle partially filled with used fluid.
- Open the bleeder nipple about 1/4 turn with the wrench. Activate the vacuum or pressure bleeder per tool instructions so fluid flows from the caliper into the bottle.
- Watch the reservoir and top with fresh DOT 4 fluid as needed to prevent air entry.
- When clear fluid free of air bubbles flows, close the bleeder nipple while fluid flow is slow, then tighten securely.
- Move to the next caliper in the sequence and repeat.
Method B: Manual pump & one-way valve
- Attach clear tubing to the bleeder and submerge the free end in the catch bottle. Install a one-way valve on the hose if available to prevent air return.
- With the bleeder closed, have a helper firmly pump the brake lever or pedal several times then hold pressure.
- Open the bleeder nipple while the helper holds pressure so fluid and air exit. Close the nipple before the helper releases the lever/pedal.
- Repeat pump–hold–open cycles until only clear fluid appears and no bubbles are present, topping the reservoir as needed.
Method C: Bench bleeding (master cylinder service or replacement)
- If removing or replacing the master cylinder, bench-bleed it before reinstalling using the manufacturer-recommended kit or procedure to remove internal air.
- After bench-bleeding, reinstall and then bleed each caliper on the vehicle as above.
Finishing steps
- After all calipers are bled in sequence and reservoirs remain full to the max line, pump the brake lever/pedal to confirm a firm, consistent feel. If sponginess remains, repeat bleeding on the circuit until solid feel is restored.
- Wipe any spilled fluid off painted surfaces immediately. Replace and tighten reservoir caps securely. Reinstall any removed panels.
- Properly dispose of used brake fluid per local regulations; do not dump into drains.
- Road-test the ATV at low speed in a safe area to confirm braking performance before normal use.
Torque & safety reminders
- Do not overtighten bleeder nipples – snug them securely and then a small additional fraction of a turn. If a specific torque is required for caliper bolts consult your factory service manual or MotoSport parts information for torque values.
- Never reuse brake fluid once removed from the system. Keep the DOT 4 bottle sealed until use and discard any fluid left in an open bottle after a service session if contamination is suspected.
- If you encounter persistent air in the system or a leaking hose/banjo fitting, replace the damaged component rather than repeating bleeding.
Recommended service interval
For reliable performance on the Outlander MAX 800R, replace brake fluid every 2 years or sooner if moisture contamination, soft lever feel, or significant color change is observed.
If you need replacement hoses, bleeder screws, caliper rebuild kits, or fresh DOT 4 fluid specifically matched to your 2012 Can-Am Outlander MAX 800R, use MotoSport parts to ensure fit and performance.
