How to Bleed & Replace Brake Fluid on a 2021 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 ES (FE1)
Shop parts for a 2021 Honda TRX420R4ES ATV.
Overview
This procedure is written for the 2021 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 ES (MMY/TRX420R4ES) and is proprietary to MotoSport. Bleeding and replacing brake fluid restores braking performance, removes air & moisture, and prevents corrosion. The Rancher uses conventional hydraulic brakes; treat fluid contamination and DOT compatibility seriously. Follow all safety precautions, read the owner's manual for model-specific cautions, and wear eye protection & gloves.
What you’ll need
- Honda-approved brake fluid (use DOT 3 or DOT 4 as specified in your owner’s manual; if unsure, choose fresh DOT 3 compatible with Honda systems)
- Clear plastic tubing that fits over bleeder nipples
- Brake bleeder bottle or catch container marked for hazardous fluid
- Wrenches to fit bleeder nipples (usually 8mm or 10mm, confirm on bike)
- Ratchet & sockets for caliper removal if needed
- Turkey baster or syringe for removing old fluid from reservoirs
- Clean lint-free rags and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning
- Assistant (recommended) or a vacuum/pressure bleeder
- Torque wrench (for any caliper bolts if removed)
Model notes – 2021 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 ES (FE1)
- The Rancher 420 FE1 trim retains conventional hydraulic front & rear brakes with separate master cylinder reservoirs. The front reservoir is accessible near the handlebar area; the rear reservoir is near the frame adjacent to the rear brake pedal. Locate translucent reservoirs before beginning.
- Hydraulic lines on this model are routed with moderate bends & protective sleeves. Inspect lines for chafing, soft spots, or leaks as you work. Replace any damaged lines before bleeding.
- Parking/hand brake linkages and pedal freeplay affect bleeding — ensure the rear brake pedal returns freely and adjust cable/play per the manual prior to final bleeding.
- This ATV does not use ABS systems that require special scan-tools, but if you note unusual valves or sensors, stop and refer to a Honda dealer manual.
Preparation
- Park on level ground, engine off, key removed. Secure machine with block under wheels if necessary.
- Clean around master cylinder reservoir caps and bleeder nipples to prevent contamination entering the system.
- Remove reservoir caps and diaphragms carefully. Keep the reservoir as full as possible during the process to prevent air ingress.
- Use a turkey baster to remove old, dark fluid from the reservoir and discard according to local hazardous-waste rules.
- Refill reservoir with fresh brake fluid to the fill line. Do not reuse old fluid or mix old & new brands/types.
Bleeding sequence — recommended order
Bleed the wheel furthest from the master cylinder first, then work toward the closest. On the Rancher that typically means: rear caliper(s) first (if rear has single caliper, bleed that), then front left, then front right. Confirm reservoir locations & routing before following sequence.
Manual two-person bleed method
- Attach clear tubing to bleeder nipple; place other end in catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air backflow.
- Have your assistant slowly depress the brake lever/pedal and hold steady.
- Open bleeder nipple 1/4 turn; fluid & air will flow into tubing. Watch for bubbles. Close nipple before assistant releases lever/pedal.
- Repeat until no visible bubbles appear and fluid runs clear, maintaining reservoir level between each cycle. Don’t allow reservoir to run low.
- Tighten bleeder nipple securely after finishing each caliper. Wipe any spilled fluid immediately & rinse painted surfaces with water & isopropyl alcohol; brake fluid is corrosive to paint & plastics.
Single-operator vacuum or pressure bleed
If using a vacuum pump, attach vacuum line to bleeder, open nipple while operating pump until clear fluid flows, then close nipple and repeat on each wheel. If using a pressure bleeder, pressurize reservoir according to tool instructions, open each bleeder until clear fluid flows, then close. Always follow tool safety steps and keep reservoir topped up.
Post-bleed checks
- Verify firm lever & pedal feel with engine off. Lever should be firm with no sponginess. If spongy, repeat bleeding.
- Confirm reservoir fluid level at the correct mark and reinstall diaphragms & caps securely.
- Cycle brakes at low speed in a safe open area to confirm braking function before normal use.
- Inspect for leaks at bleeders, hose fittings, calipers & master cylinder after a short test ride.
Torque & tightening
Tighten bleeder screws snugly; avoid over-torquing. When reinstalling calipers or banjo bolts (if removed), use factory torque specs from the Honda service manual. If you do not have the manual, torque caliper fasteners to a conservative value and inspect for leaks on first ride.
Safety & disposal
- Brake fluid is hygroscopic & corrosive. Store unopened containers sealed. Dispose of used fluid per local hazardous-waste regulations.
- Do not let brake fluid contact painted surfaces; wipe spills immediately and clean with water & isopropyl alcohol.
- If the brake pedal or lever feels abnormal after bleeding, stop riding and re-check the system; unsafe brakes can cause injury or death.
Troubleshooting
- Persistent spongy lever: likely remaining air, compromised hose, or master cylinder wear. Repeat bleed and inspect components.
- Continuous loss of fluid: find the leak & repair or replace affected part before riding.
- If one caliper won't purge air: remove caliper & bench-bleed, or replace the caliper if internal seals are sticking.
Maintenance interval recommendation
MotoSport recommends replacing brake fluid every 1-2 years depending on use & storage conditions, or sooner if fluid appears dark or contaminated. Regular inspection of hoses, fittings & pads keeps your Rancher 420 safe and reliable.
Follow these steps for a safe, effective fluid change and bleed. When in doubt about components or torque specs, consult a Honda service manual or a certified technician before riding.
