The Akrapovic story begins in 1990 when Ivan Akrapovic founded his motorcycle exhaust company to provide high-quality exhaust systems to the public at affordable prices. Akrapovic, a champion in F1 and SBK classes, designed his own custom made motorcycle exhaust systems for private racing teams. In 1993, Kawasaki Germany tested the exhaust system opening the doors to the Pro Superbike championship. Originally called Skorpion (what Akrapovic means in Slovene), the company changed to its current name in 1997 after Akira Yanagawa became the first to win a race using an Akrapovic exhaust on a Kawasaki bike.
After wins in the WSBK and the 600ss class, Akrapovic entered the AMA Superbike and the All Japan Superbike championship series. Akrapovic exhausts were on every Japanese factory entry for the 1999 World Superbike grid. In 2002, the company ventured into the MotoGP class and formed partnerships with Honda, Kawasaki and Aprilia factory teams. Akrapovic commenced operations in the United Stated in 2010.
