2024 San Diego Supercross Recap

Anudder mudder?

Sort of. Kind of. Maybe. Round 3 of Monster Energy Supercross in San Diego on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium didn't rise to the level of the week earlier in San Francisco but the mud still proved costly for some. No torrential rain storm either. That came later, but sloppy conditions resulted from earlier weeping clouds which made the whole look and feel resemble that of Arenacross.

Or maybe it was just the stadium. Or track layout. It was halfway decent by the Mains though.

Aaron Plessinger - the cowboy as he's called in some circles, or Ronnie Mac's cousin in others - took advantage of Ken Roczen tossing the bike away after a jump, and never looked back for the next 15 laps for his first 450 class win. The victory and his riding gear brought back memories of his almost win last year in Detroit when he led 20 laps with a sure-grip on the checkers until he went down with two to go finishing 13th. He wore the same gear he did on that fateful night. Or maybe Thor just hasn't released anything new.

Plessinger's win upends the points standings again. In a season when many thought sort-of rookie Jett Lawrence would ride away with a perfect season and close in on Jeremy McGrath’s all-time record, the Australian Aeroplane didn't make the podium for the second week in a row and drops to third in the standings. So get this: Plessinger not only grabbed his first premier class win but he holds the Red Plate for the first time ever. Chase Sexton, winner of Round 2, hands over the points lead to Plessinger albeit by one. Sexton had a miserable outing, finishing eighth, just in front of Eli Tomac, who had a run-in with Christian Craig resulting in a clutch problem that dropped Tomac to nearly last after just a few laps before he got up and running again. Roczen's crash dropped him to 12th.

Cooper Webb took a season best second. He finished second in that Detroit round too. Justin Barcia finished a season-best third, Lawrence took fourth and Jason Anderson rounded out the Top 5. Anderson, Webb and Dylan Ferrandis take up fourth through sixth place, respectively, tied in points. Tomac sits in seventh, dropping from third, just a point behind the three.

Lawrence and Anderson held a brew ha ha post-race which lit up social media. Both received fines but with the season still in its infancy, NBC has must-see-TV again. Oh, Webb waved "Hi" to Sexton with his middle finger during the race.

VERY (potentially) EXCITING YEAR AHEAD.

The 250SX West race was far less exciting though it too brought in the third different winner in Nate Thrasher. He battled a little with Garrett Marchbanks, who led five laps, before relinquishing the lead with four laps left. Marchbanks took second, besting last week's third-place finish. So maybe next week he wins.

Jordon Smith holds on to the Red Plate with a third-place finish. Smith has stepped on the podium all three rounds. RJ Hampshire, the dominating season-opening winner, grabbed the Holeshot and led seven laps before casing a jump. He finished sixth and drops to fourth in the standings behind Marchbanks. Jo Shimoda bounced back from a DNF the week prior to finish fourth and Levi Kitchen rounded out the Top 5 holding on to second in the standings.

Two mudders out of three. Maybe an earthquake will interrupt Anaheim 2 on Saturday at Angel Stadium.
