2023 Ironman Motocross Recap

He did it.

Both did it.

Jett Lawrence completed the perfect season. Hunter Lawrence secured the 250 class Championship. The 2023 Pro Motocross Championship season concluded Saturday at Ironman National in Crawfordsville, IN with the two phenoms from Australia placing their names in Outdoor history.

Jett Lawrence wrapped the 450 class championship months ago. Not really, just feels like it as he faced little to no competition all year with many riders sidelined because of injury and the rest just couldn't catch up. The premier class rookie had little trouble, again, on Saturday sweeping for the 11th time in a row and ending the series with 550 points, the most possible.

Lawrence had one round less to ride from previous years as the newly formed SuperMotocross series which combines the points earned in Supercross and Motocross to give riders a chance to win big money and the honor of securing another title commences in a couple of weeks in a three round playoff system. Still, Lawrence probably would have powered through a Round 12 just as he did all the other rounds. He joins Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart as the only riders in history to ride a perfect season.

Dylan Ferrandis finishes second for the 2023 Outdoor season 151 points back. But it was Chase Sexton chasing Lawrence all year with the exception of three rounds when he was out nursing an injury. He finished second to Lawrence 13 times in the 16 Motos raced. Crash Sexton probably fits better as he hit the dirt more times than he cares to remember ending a number of chances over the course of the season for Sexton, the 2023 450 class Supercross Champion, to interrupt Lawrence's rhythm and flow.

Ironman ended like so many others rounds with Lawrence taking first overall and Sexton second overall. Aaron Plessinger (5-3) finished third overall on the tiebreaker to Jason Anderson (4-4). Plessinger finishes third for the season. Sexton, despite missing six races, takes fourth on the season inching past Adam Cianciarulo in the last round.

  3. Aaron Plessinger - 386
  4. Chase Sexton - 338

The 250 class offered the most excitement all season as the Red Plate changed hands, once, as Hunter Lawrence suffered a crash in one round and a mechanical in another leaving an available 50 points on the table allowing the field to catch up. Rookie Haiden Deegan looked to make history of his own but just as quickly as he popped into the Championship race and taking the points lead after Southwick he dropped out with some rough rides and a mechanical.

In the end, Justin Cooper was all that stood between a glorious year for Lawrence or disappointment and a pileup at the start of Moto 1 quickly brushed him out of the way. Cooper worked his way from the back of the pack to 13th but Lawrence, who took six overalls for the year, finished fifth securing the title.

With all eyes on Lawrence, Jo Shimoda quietly went 1-1 for the first time in his career getting around Ryder DiFrancesco (9-6) after about nine minutes for second and shortly later taking the lead from Tom Vialle (3-4) in Moto 1 and needing about 10 minutes to get past DiFrancisco for the lead in Moto 2 with little trouble thereafter.

Cooper (13-2) finished second in Moto 2 but the ink was already dry on the Championship. He finished 20 points back of Lawrence for the year and Shimoda finishes third, six points back of Cooper. Deegan finished second overall at Ironman on a (2-3) day and fourth for the year. Levi Kitchen (7-17) rounds out the Top 5 for the season.
