2021 Spring Creek Motocross Recap
Crashes and new winners highlighted a rather wild Round 6 of the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship series on Saturday at Spring Creek in Millville, MN.
Justin Barcia (1-2) slipped into third-place in the 450 class Championship standings thanks to his first overall win in nearly three years. Barcia grabbed the holeshot in both Motos, checking out in the first race once Adam Cianciarulo hit the dirt but still had to fight off a determined Dylan Ferrandis to take the checkers. In Moto 2, he had little in the tank for Ken Roczen (DNF-1) so he settled in for second and easily took the overall.
“It was a really good day, I felt incredible,� he said post-race. “Just super happy and grateful. It was awesome. I’m a little lost for words still.�
Roczen’s win helped soothe a DNF in Moto 1 and calm fans’ fears as he went down hard in a first turn crash and needed the cart. He finished eighth overall and lost more points to Ferrandis who finished third overall on a (2-5) day, which included crashing twice in the second race. Ferrandis now leads Roczen by 32 points in the 450 class title chase.
Eli Tomac (3-4) finished second overall on the tie-breaker to Ferrandis as his streak of poor finishes in Moto 1 followed by a win in Moto 2 came to an end. Tomac managed a third in the first race after Roczen’s crash affected his line leaving him near the back of the pack.
Cooper Webb (6-23), the reigning Supercross champion, squirreled into the ground then tossed of his bike after landing on the edge of the track in soft sand coming off the finish line jump in Moto but returned to the race and finished 23rd.
Chase Sexton (3-7) and Christian Craig (4-6) rounded out the Top 5, respectively.
In the 250 class, injured Jeremy Martin (1-1) enjoyed a home track advantage with a sweep and his first overall of the year. Martin dislocated his shoulder earlier this year and broke some fingers at Round 3 had little trouble with Justin Cooper in the first race and fully checked out for Moto 2 and the win.
As a result, he jumped from eighth in the championship standings to fourth but has a long uphill battle if he’s to contend for the championship. Martin also marked the sixth different winner in as many rounds for the 250 class this year.
In the second race, RJ Hampshire (6-38) and Pierce Brown (15-39) came together resulting in a small pile-up than took out four other riders. One of those riders hit Brown and another ran him over as he desperately tried getting out of the way of oncoming traffic. Neither he nor Hampshire (Hampshire got track banners caught in his rear wheel) finished the race but the pile-up impacted series leader Jett Lawrence (4-6) as he finished fourth-overall, salvaging sixth in that race but lost nine points to Justin Cooper, who now holds the Red Plate. Cooper (2-3) had a mostly quiet day finishing third overall while Michael Mosiman (3-2) took second on the tiebreaker in his best outing of the season.
Motocross heads to the Pacific Northwest on Saturday for the home race of MotoSport.com at Washougal National. Gates drop at 1 p.m. (PST) at 1 p.m. for the 250 class. Until then live Round 6 all again.
