2021 RedBud Motocross Recap

Racing fans flocked to the RedBud National on Saturday as the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship series resumed after a weekend off between rounds to help America celebrate its Independence Day in grand fashion.

A large American flag flew proudly offering spectacular photo backdrops, Covid masks were nowhere in sight, the sun shone brightly and epic racing made all things right in the world, at least for a day.

Dylan Ferrandis extended his points lead to 14 in the 450 class Championship hunt with his third overall win of the year going (1-2) on the day. Heading into the round, Ferrandis held a slim three-point margin over Ken Roczen and appeared in danger of losing that lead as he needed to work his way up from sixth-place in Moto 1 while having to pass three-time MX champion Eli Tomac, Adam Cianciarulo and Roczen among others for the lead and win.

Ferrandis was no match for Tomac in Moto 2 so he settled on second-place and secured the overall win. Tomac (4-1) led 15 laps and was nearly untouchable in the second race and his finishes gave him second overall for the day, his best result so far on the season. Tomac has yet to win an overall but has won two of the last four Motos and looks ready for a mid-summer breakout after a slow start. Tomac sits in fifth-place in the standings 50 points from Ferrandis.

Roczen (2-6) was battling for the lead in Moto 2 then got tossed off the bike pretty good as he entered a turn, his body coming to rest on the berm, but he managed to get back up and finish sixth for fourth overall and salvage points. Aaron Plessinger went (3-3) for third-place. Christian Craig (5-5) finished fifth overall in his best outing of the season.

In the 250 class, RJ Hampshire got some redemption after a broken chain at High Point cost him the lead in Moto 1 resulting in a DNF. This time around he didn’t get a Moto win, crashed quite a bit but still managed to take the overall. In Moto 1, Justin Cooper looked poised to checkout but took a digger on the first lap gifting the lead to Hampshire, but he gifted the lead to Jett Lawrence, then Hampshire worked his way back to second, crashed again and worked his way back to second again.

In Moto 2, Hampshire had little left in the tank for Cooper (4-1) who stayed upright for the win and secured second overall. Hampshire led five laps and hung on for second finishing nearly 13 seconds back of Cooper. Lawrence (1-6), looking for the victory, endured a bad start than a crash early in the race dumped him to the back of the pack. He battled back for sixth-place and third overall. Hunter Lawrence (3-4) took fourth overall and Jeremy Martin (5-3) managed fifth despite numerous injuries including broken fingers that prevented him from lining up two weeks early at high point.

The stretch of four weeks of racing continues on Saturday at the Southwick National sand trap in Massachusetts. Until then live Round 4 all again.
